For a creature that is at least 65 million years too late, the pteranodon is fitting rather neatly into the modern airspace, Stephen Hart thinks, as he gazes at the flying reptile through the crosshairs of his rifle. One of the biggest animals that had ever flown, the pterosaur is surprisingly fast and manoeuvrable, and cannot be hit even with tranquilizer darts – and it is coming ever closer. Soon it is almost upon them, aiming for Cutter's red flag.

The Flight of the Valkyries' music might be appropriate here, Stephen thinks for some reason even as he fires the tranquilizer dart.

Immediately, the pteranodon falls, no longer an unstoppable flying monster, but a giant unwieldy kite as it tumbles towards Claudia Brown before falling asleep.

It is over.
