Description Yard 9, on the Northern tip of the massive Proviso rail yard. Yard 9 usually handles inbound trains from out west arriving off the Geneva sub, , though it also is where some foreign railroad transfers are assembled (so it's not unusual to see CN, NS, and CSX power here). It also tends to be used for maintenance of way staging, provides access to the various businesses between the yard and I-294 (using the "hole" tracks which are about twenty feet below the yard level), and sometimes handles cars for Wisconsin side trains. One of the oldest, though recently renovated sections of Proviso, the road bridges here still date to well before the war!
As for this glut of big six axle locomotives, I don't know why they are being squirreled away up here. My best guess is they are awaiting rebuilding and upgrading to the Tier III or whatever EPA emissions program is called now. There was at least one yellow submarine (three part windshield SD60), some older SD70s, maybe a few SD90s, and a LOT of older GE's (think i saw an ex C&NW unit, but it was hard to get a decent shot without getting in the way of the yard job off to the right). Proviso Yard 9, Northlake IL 8-12-12

If I had to guess, extra power side lined. Alot of those are SD60's and Dash-9's.

They are just in storage, it seems. I have a feeling they will either be sold off or scrapped eventually. In some cases, it's a shame. I'd take an SD70 over a new GE or EMD any day

Probably will be sold off to shortlines or something also.

Next time i'm in the area i might drive up to the north end if nobody is around, see how many are really in there. My rough estimate is about 150 locos, since each of those tracks can hold about 80-90 average freight cars. And it looks like they are taking up most of three or four tracks!

That's what i said! I can still remember the annoying power shortages of just a few years ago, when we would have a single SD70 or nasty old SD60's for 6-7K feet of train. And that was with all the standard cabs still in service!

California is evil Matt.. They think putting a railroad on Green is going to solve their problem when the railroad already figured it out!
