For the past several years, New York City had been protected by the web-swinging wonder himself, Spider-Man. In more recent months, however, a new, more shapely web-slinger had begun making her way through the city's skyline and dealing with wrongdoers. There was much speculation about her identity, but Felicia Hardy, or to those who knew of her secret identity, Black Cat, had a sneaking suspicion she knew exactly who it was.

And so, one evening when she knew for certain that Peter Parker was attending a scientific convention in Chicago, Felicia placed a device designed to attract anyone with a Spider-Sense on the roof of one of Manhattan's many skyscrapers. It wasn't too long before "Spider-Woman" arrived to investigate, leading to Black Cat suddenly pouncing and unmasking the womanly web-slinger to reveal none other than Peter's on-and-off girlfriend, Mary-Jane Watson. She wasn't very forthcoming about when and how she had gotten her new abilities, but that wasn't important right now.

Felicia made MJ a proposition; she would help her gain access to the apartment of Wilson Fisk, the notorious (and yet still unpunished) Kingpin of Crime, who was the prime suspect in stealing the priceless Soul of Symkaria statuette from the city's museum. When quizzed further, Felicia assured MJ that she had no interest in doing anything beyond being a good citizen, helping a new superheroine to firmly establish herself... and relieving Fisk of half a million dollars in bearer bonds that he had stashed in his safe.

MJ knew deep down that what Felicia was suggesting was wrong, but hey, stealing something back and returning it to its rightful owner isn't really a crime, right?
