The position of the stag - slightly off centre - adds credibility. The antlers are unequal (left and right parts are different) and the rear leg position looks convincing too. That`s important because the stag is the focus - he looks good and that gives the image impact. The circular light in the sky is, as you say, fun. A little like a major celestial feature surrounded by stars - or just a squiggle - depending on the viewer`s reaction. The rest of the background works because it provides balance to the focus without detracting from it. The water helps, especially with the mist rising from it. Overall this is an entertaining combination of reality and fun.
