I have just one question.
I noticed this on your other works, but I finally got curious enough to ask: why do you carve out the pupil of the eye and not the white of the eye? I only ask because if you end up doing something like a felt or paper cutout then I notice that it usually looks better when you create depth by having the eye's highlights on top followed by the the pupil and then the white (if that makes any sense at all). Basically, how come you indent the pupil rather than the white?
Other than my confusion with that, this is shaping out to be great!

The pupil and the iris (I know I haven't carved out the iris in any of my pieces but I've been doing a little research so I can better answer your question) are indented because they are darker than the rest of the eye. Usually the darker someone's eyes is, the deeper they are carved out. This creates shadows and makes it seem that they are a darker color than the rest of the surrounding areas.
Yes, it does look better if you have the pupil and the iris on top of the eyewhite when making a paper cutout or something similar, but you're not having to deal with shadows because it is a flat 2D image. Sure you can add the shadows and highlights, but they are still in a 2D environment. The game changes when things go 3D. Instead of using lines and shapes to define your forms, you have to use shadows to define them.
I can only think of one instance where I might carve out the eyewhite. Let's say you have a black eye with a red iris and and even brighter pupil. I'd probably carve out the eyewhite leaving the iris and pupil at a higher depth if that makes sense.
I hope this answers your question.

You were right about the carving thing! It really does give the effect your teacher person was talking about!
This is coming out very nicely though!

she's shaping up quite well, although are you really going for a smile? the one you have posted carries the benevolent smile... I would have seen hers as more of the I smile because I am amused type
or i am satisfied with myself... perhaps the mouth should be the last thing you touch up, making it the culmination of what you feel in finishing your statue

I think the benevolent smile the kind of smile I want her to have. Not sure why, but that's how I'm seeing it in my head right now. I could play around with other expressions, but there's only so much I can do without getting the eyes involved.
I could wait until the end to finish the mouth, but I feel like it's one of those things I need to work on a little each day. I also need to make sure the anatomy of the smile works with the anatomy of the nose. I think it'd be a lot easier to do that when I don't have things like the mane and horn distracting me or throwing off my vision.
But I don't know. I'm no where near finished with anything so there's no telling what's going to happen. I could go in tomorrow, look at it, hate it, and completely change her expression.

Oh I for got this one, to add to the one below
[link]
shelltoontv compiled several facial expressions
my biggest angle is Luna's facial expressions are heavily influenced by her eye lids she has very large eyes in comparison to celestia, I think they would be a most useful tool in conveying her facial expression to being less blank

you're right, although I must point out my personal love for her amused smile in [link]
mind you I know her mouth is full, then again there is the [link] by sirponylancelot
and this is a capture too [link]
I think you may have to make some adjustments to the eyes, if only to put eye lids on as she puts her lids at rest when she is truly smiling.

This kind of a reply for both of your comments.
Body language plays a big part in most of those expressions as well as the eyelids. I'm kind of stuck with what I have right now so her expression will have to be subtle or I'll have to find one that fits with her current pose. OR I'll just let Luna decide. lol
I'm definitely going to have to make adjustments to the eyes. I'm just taking it a little bit at a time.
