New EAH OC. another one based on a Middle High German epic…or actually on two. At the same time: The Legends of Ortnit and Wolfdietrich, two stories interconnected, the latter being not only a sequel of the former, but they have a lot of mirroring themes and imagery as well. I’ve read them because initially I simply had to, studying German and all but since they prompted a new OC you can tell I kinda liked them in the end. The story of Ortnit more so than the story of Wolfdietrich, which was basically just another “great knight is great” story. Ortnits story was a bit more interesting because it didn’t follow the traditional formula of a Middle High German knight epic. But it also ended with “Ortnit died without having kids” and, wanting to stay true to the source, I couldn’t just make him the son of Ortnit even though that certainly would be a more interesting destiny for him to deal with. What I did instead was make him the son of Wolfdietrich but make it actually unclear if he will be his fathers successor, making him develop traits the fallen hero Ortnit was known for as well. After all, it needs an Ortnit to die for a Wolfdietrich to be able to take over. So…yeah. Will he be the one taking over...or will he be the one who'll be taken over?
