For those interested in getting this on Windows, it should be VERY easy with TrueTransparency: [link]

I think that apart from a webOS, the tabbed ui will be great for a normal OS. also, the address bar can give way to the menu bar of an application like kate or openoffice. My only concern about chromeOS and this... Firefox OS, is the issue of multitasking, when you need to have two or applications visible at once.

PIMPinator In reply to kumaraatish [2011-01-23 15:21:14 +0000 UTC]

There's already tonnes of tabbed Window Managers giving you a tabbed UI for your OS.

The new tablets should have a good simple interface by default, but they should have a button that swaps over to a highly raw format that shows the guts of the operating system.

At the push of a button, you go from Glory to Guts, then with another push, back to Glory.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BigRZA In reply to AMDphreak [2011-01-13 15:16:50 +0000 UTC]

yeah but the usual tablet user doesn't want to see the guts, only the glory
But for someone who want something like this, i would recommend a linux distro like ubuntu.
I think the unity interface they are working on will be much more touch friendly in the future.
With this you could change between touch friendly unity glory, a desktop interface or the good old CLI

what about an administrative gesture, like pressing down on all four corners of the screen? Then that prompts a password, then after entering it, it switches over to the administrative GUI, which would essentially be a good tiling window manager with a bash prompt at hand...of course, shift-F7 won't work any more, because no keyboard.

Or, maybe it could be typed through a virtual keyboard. Or maybe an "app". I don't think putting admin tasks into an app would be a good idea. It's annoying to think about all the administrative tasks being inside a single app, and it would essentially be a Linux distro inside this Linux distro, which is also annoying to think about.

Very cool; I love the idea of a Firefox OS. Incidentally, ever try Fire Commander as a file manager? Firefly's pretty awesome, but at least Fire Commander's compatible with newer versions of Fx. Just saying.

foxhead128 In reply to foxhead128 [2011-01-08 19:49:41 +0000 UTC]

What I mean to say is, it has less issues with compatibility when you tweak the install.RDF file.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BigRZA In reply to foxhead128 [2011-01-09 15:18:53 +0000 UTC]

i like firefly because it runs inside a tab, without a separate window like fire commander does.
xPud is awesome. I was searching for something like that. now i have a 5 sec boot firefox os, thanks

foxhead128 In reply to BigRZA [2011-01-09 17:54:00 +0000 UTC]

No problem. Incidentally, it's possible to load Fire Commander in a new tab; just create a bookmark linking to chrome://firecommander/content/firecommander.xul, then CTRL-click it to open in a new tab instead of the current one. Rather crude (and some of Firefox's keyboard shortcuts won't work with Fire Commander in the current tab), but it works decently.

Have you tried jolicloud ? I'm not sure if it is useful to have another cloud os, but your screen shot is very nice. I've used Ubuntu for a long time and it is very nice, but i guess Arch Linux would be a better base for a cloud os.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BigRZA In reply to spktkpkt [2011-01-08 17:40:41 +0000 UTC]

I tested an earlier version of jolicloud and its nice but Im bound to firefox because of exclusive addons like noscript and adblock and yeah i agree that arch would be better than ubuntu but its to much of a hassle for me to install it so now im looking for mini distros like dsl or puppy linux where i can install ff4 on it

Nice work! Looks as polished as any of these "cloud" OS'. I imagine it can also be truly lightweight if you remove all the unnecessary daemons running in the background in a regular desktop linux based OS.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BigRZA In reply to theb4rd [2011-01-09 17:55:11 +0000 UTC]

Thank you and yes its somewhat lightweight after switching from ubuntu tu xPUD.
Now firefox boots in 5sec and hd flash video runs smoothly
