These are the work-in-progress steps for a 2.5" x 3.5" sketch card featuring Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf the White for Cryptozoic's Middle-earth trading card set released October 2022
Usually I sketch with graphite pencils, apply ink fineliner and then erase the pencil but since this card doesn't have any black ink outlines the initial sketch was drawn using colours that fit the final colour palette.
A light initial layer of Copic marker is applied, suggesting the overall colour scheme which is refined as the card progresses using sharp Polychromos pencils.
