Description This one will be familiar to some of you since the one and only WIP stage has been in my gallery since day 1. It's been lurking in my portfolio for some time so I decided to finish it off. In some ways I prefer the WIP version to this... ...

I love the detail around his eye and mouth but again, I'm getting concerned that I'm losing my touch since I've been working so much with digital the past few months. Another pencil piece may be just around the corner...

...if it comes out looking like a decroded piece of crap... it'll never see the light of day...

Super portrait. The eye is perfect. Nose too small. Chin not quite right. Such details are neither here nor there, as you've captured the essence of the man perfectly.

Congratulations on this wonderful portrait! It looks so alive, and you managed to make the skin look so much like real skin, not to mention his eye; so bright, as if he is looking straight at me...Really a VERY good job!

I have to agree with mercurium that the lack of the right eye seems a bit disturbing... I can see where you were going with this, and you did an amazing job, but I think I would've liked to have seen at least something over on the right side. Even if just a little bit of highlighting where an eyebrow catches the light or something, I don't know. I'd like to see the reference photo you used for this. You did a brilliant job, and I doubt I could've done any better, but it doesn't quite feel finished for some reason.

spinninghead In reply to spinninghead [2006-07-20 06:10:51 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry, by eyebrow I meant eyelash, haha. You must've thought I was crazy, because obviously there is highlighting where the eyebrow is! Sorry about that.

BikerScout In reply to spinninghead [2006-07-20 08:04:01 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your comments, spinninghead.

I specifically chose the reference image for this one (now uploaded in my Scraps here) because it was slightly unconventional. There are thousands upon thousands of evenly lit photos out there and I've used some myself, but I like to work from images that are not so familiar. I quite often see deviations that are based on the same photos - I'd rather not do that. It's nice to stand out.

As far as being unfinished is concerned, that is a style I use in practically all my pencil portraits. I have a real dislike of perfectly smooth, pristinely finished portraits. Are they technically impressive? Of course they are. Do I find them interesting? Not really.

This is also the reason why I don't smooth my graphite pieces. I like to have rough lines... grainy textures... scratchy backgrounds... which is why it might appear unfinished. I've been told on numerous occasions that it adds personality to a portrait and it's how I've always worked.

To quote Sam Jackson in Pulp Fiction - "Personality goes along way..."

Ah, okay. ^_^ Looks like you did a great job of capturing what I see in the original photo - I think part of why the blackness on the right looks a bit odd in your portrait is that maybe it could be a little darker? I think the fact that you can actually see the strokes of the pencil in that area takes a little bit away from the effect of it being a shadow... but who knows. Anyway, I am especially impressed since seeing the photo, and keep up the awesome work! I think I'll check out your gallery.

BikerScout In reply to spinninghead [2006-07-20 08:58:20 +0000 UTC]

I hate that striping effect. The only reason it's not darker is because I would just get in a mess... messy hands... spiralling laundry bills... I think you can see where I'm going.

Occasionally I do some touch work in Photoshop. I did it on Mean Machine - the dark areas are much darker, but that's heading towards the 'polished' look that I try to avoid.

Thank for taking the time to stop by and comment. It's refreshing to get such honest comments.

No problem! Work like yours deserves thought-out comments. ^_^ And I know what you mean by your hands getting all messy... were you just using graphite on this, or was it charcoal? I love using charcoal because it really does get the dark areas of pictures nice and black... but man, that stuff is definitely messy! That reminds me, though, I should be working on my most recent WIP... gah, I've gotten so lazy with pencil portraits as of late!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BikerScout In reply to spinninghead [2006-07-21 07:56:10 +0000 UTC]

This is all 2B if I remember correctly. Possibly some 6B for the right side.

I'm definitely going to try some charcoal. Do you use a spray fixer to hold it all in place afterwards?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

spinninghead In reply to BikerScout [2006-07-21 08:28:05 +0000 UTC]

I'd be surprised if you hadn't used something like a 6b for that right side... to acheive that kind of blackness with a 2b seems quite difficult! But yes, I use hairspray to keep my charcoal portraits from smudging, as well as with my graphite ones... TreSemme, to be exact, haha. It was just what I happened to have on hand in my bathroom, and it works!

I like this one better than WIP version - more sensitive though the lack of the right eye (from my point of view) is bit disturbing however in some strange way I like the work Again, good work!

It looks great, which I think you know eh? I love Patrick Stewart. His voice is so soothing. 'Course, maybe thats just because my mom watched Star Trek all the time when I was little, so he was like a little bedtime story.

I like the eye on this one. I know what you mean about prefering the WIP though. I usually like my WIPs better, but for me it's more of having an excuse. If I don't like something about a drawing I just tell myself it's 'cause it's not done. Once it's done there's no more excuses lol I can't wait to see more pencil work from ya though
