Arnold Johannes Wilhelm Sommerfeld (Königsberg, December 5, 1868 - Munich, April 26, 1951) was a German physicist.
He worked in theoretical physics, in particular in atomic and quantum physics. He is known for his contributions to the Bohr atomic model, for the Wilson-Sommerfeld formula, for the introduction of the fine structure constant in quantum mechanics and of the orbital quantum number. In 1927 Sommerfeld applied the Fermi-Dirac statistic to the Drude model, solving many problems regarding the behavior of electrons in metals and giving rise to what is commonly called the Drude-Sommerfeld model.
Between 1928 and 1929, satisfied with what he had achieved in America a few years earlier, the Ordinary of Monaco brought his conception of theoretical physics around the world and in particular of the still much debated quantum mechanics, visiting again the United States, China, Japan and dwelling in India.
