Description With a fresh coat of lacquer, glass plate portraits ready to be picked up.

These photos were taken just 20-25 minutes earlier. They are not antiques, but the result of an aficionado practicing the old art.

These glass plate photos were taken with a 1912-ish Eastman Kodak field camera, modified to hold the glass plates. Exposure for the plates were 5-10 seconds each. The detail in each photo was absolutely amazing, something that must be seen in person to truly appreciate.

I'm so glad I don't know of a place that does this around here, because, being the history geek that I am, I would save up all my money to get a portrait of myself like this. Absolutely gorgeous. I'm so glad that some people keep the old art alive!

He was pretty reasonable: $40 for a plate that met your satisfaction, even if it took five tries.

He was quite a treat to find and talk to.

Nice, I like how the glass plate on the left looks like a hologram... almost like a comparison of old and new technologies.

billsabub In reply to hitmanh [2006-10-23 01:47:40 +0000 UTC]

Almost. He had to put black construction paper behind each glass plate just so the buyer could enjoy the image when they took it home.

she could stand still for 10 seconds?

billsabub In reply to shiriru [2006-10-22 20:56:31 +0000 UTC]

Pretty close to it. At least still enough that the image was reasonably sharp.

But she certainly let out a huge sigh when he said she was done. I know it was tough!

heh... thought so...
Another thing interests me is how on earth have you guys got a 1921 camera... shouldn't they be extinct or something?

billsabub In reply to shiriru [2006-10-24 01:20:21 +0000 UTC]

Only if people let them become extinct. Then we lose a piece of our past.

And that's not good.

Fascinating! First thing I thought when looking at the photo on the right was "hologram". Funny how these things hit our concepts.

Damn, that is some fine work there. The detail is truly amazing and you've cpatured it so well, in their natural habitat. The images look ghostly and that effect, 'm sure can be made to produce some truly stunning effect. (meaning I'd like to see you try it! )

Nice shot as always, composure wise and in a techinical sense, but man, I just love it that you find such unique subject for your picture. That is the true art of photography!

Try it? No chance with a computer. But he definitely got us to thinking. Although the DEA background check just so we can buy the ether sounds like a pain in the arse.

Did you get a chance to look at the others? I think I posted the link after you looked at this one. See them here .

I recall seeing a few of these in person before. I remmeber them having so much depth and detail I almost thought they were holograms.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

billsabub In reply to kevjohn [2006-10-22 17:44:11 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. And the photographer was explaining how he could make the effect even more so by lightly painting the lines with a fine brush.

Amazing stuff, especially considering it's 150 year old technology.
