Dithering is not necessary WITHOUT a limited color palette, is it?
I was thinking specifically of the backdrops on the portraits in Koei's easly Romance of the Three Kingdoms games, on that topic. They exhibited a wide variety of space filling patterns.

Well, yeah, it does make a cool pattern, too. But it can also be used to make gradients or blend colors without having to worry about not having enough colors to choose from (like in 8-bit games). Either way, this looks awesome!
