Description Oh expectations, how you let me down This started as a 60 minute speed paint task, but I got engrossed and decided to work on it a bit more properly. It seemed so promising, and did for quite a while too. Now, 6 and half hour later of work, it has not gone well. It's not terrible exactly, but it's a far cry from what I was hoping for and aiming to make, and the difference between that and the result so far is bringing me down and makes it hard to work on it any more for now.

The fur is terrible, despite my efforts. The more I work on it the worse it seems to get and the fur brushes I tried to make wasn't helping me at all. I like the face in a way, but I don't feel any character to it, I don't get interested, and the composition is meh, or from seeing the thumbnail it makes here, worse than meh. I went from happy and hopeful to deflated resentment.

I suspect a lot of the problems started out because it wasn't a thoroughly planned image to start with. The issues with the fur is a puzzler as I even looked up a tutorial to try and make more rendered fur rather than my speed paint stuff. The fact that I timed myself, which I only do for speed paints, was because I've been toying with the idea of doing commissions, but I didn't know how long it would take me to make stuff beyond speed paints. Having my first intended example piece turn into a disappointing dud hasn't improved my mood either. If I get some time away from it, work on other stuff maybe I'll muster up the energy to go back to this and try to fix it.

Though I already know some of the faults already, I still like to hear more critique and suggestions from others

As for the character he doesn't have a name. The speedpaint task was for a nobleman, and I thought up a vague story of minor lords that got trade monopolies for their families interests. And this man in particular comes from the family with monopoly on silver good. The time of the monopoly has expired over a hundred years ago and many of the other merchant lords are not concerned with their old businesses, but some still held on and kept at the trade.

Thank you very much for the good critique and I'll keep it in mind for when I redo it. The list of stuff to fix has grown rather large by now

I know, I was just having a bit of fun with it I like concocting grand schemes, and while putting a dragon glass in production is actually rather realistic compared to my usual stuff, it is still quite unlikely and will in all probability just be a fun idea.

Pro:The detail is incredible. The shading is amazing, not too subtle but not too fast either.
Con: The hand holding the cup is very well done, but it would be even better if you could fix up the hand on the arm rest.
Overall: Very nicely done. A lot of detail, but not over done.

Birgitte-Gustavsen In reply to PracticallyUseless [2011-08-10 05:57:41 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much for the critique and I did indeed fudge with the arm rest hand. I was getting a bit impatient, and I suspected that when I get back to this I would have to alter the pose from the neck down, so from even before it was done I knew the hand would be a stand-in, so to speak.

This isn't actually that bad!
For the fur, I think you could try mixing some longer strands with the short, that might help bulk it up a bit. It also looks as though the arm holding the wine glass is a little ill proportioned (the upper arm too long and the forearm too short).

Otherwise, it's quite good. The wine glass is very cool, and the entire painting feels reminiscent of traditional noblemen portraits from the Baroque period. It's nice.

That dragon at the glass is cool! nice idea!
And don't get let yourself down. I know the feeling that paintings don't turn out the way you want. But it is always an experience. You can learn out of it. And not everything is bad. There are always good things about a picture And I think you captured a kind of arrogance in his glance that suits a nobleman
