The end of that movie was .... argh! Wrongs end of all and not acceptable, that smile on JVJ face,.. nono. They cut something there, I'm sure about it or that is not JVJ.

Merde.. Valjean, t'es un salaud.
Actually I hate this version of Miz.... JVJ is too brute and J also, but it doesn't mean I don't like Javert's actor~~~ Geoffrey is great !!!!!!!!

Well, there are a few things I really don't like of this movie, overall the end... with a jumping happy JVJ walking near the river... ARGH! The real JVJ would, at least, try to save him!!!

Yes! I watched this film with my mother, my mother said: why Jvj don't try to save Javert, he can do that! And me, was as: oh gosh... This is not the real end! When Javert jumped in the river, there shouldn't be a Jvj near the river!
BTW, I love Goeffrey's Javert~ even he is so brutal in the movie, like, slap Fantine, abuse Cosette.. Those never happen in the book! [slap the director and the scenarist!!!

The thing that I hate most of all about Geoffrey Rush's Javert is not his height, nor his lack of mystique, it's... his HUGE FRICKIN NOSE!!! LOOK AT IT!!!! IT'S GIANT AND UGLY AND... AAAAARGH!!!!!
Yeah.

But it's just so.... GROSS!!!!
And that is in no way a snub nose, the way his nose is described in the book. And I feel that his muttonchops are unsatisfactory.

Hm... two huge bushy sideburns... I think Quast is satisfactory on the muttonchops front.

As much as I love that adaptation, I'm actually not a fan of lil Charlie's sideburns. They're too perfectly round at the ends. I mean, look! [link]

Yeah, but my least favorite Javert is a tie between Charles Laughton (he is an excellent actor, but his face was too fat and did he even HAVE any muttonchops?) and the anime Shoujo Cosette Javert. That... thing looked more like a messed up Thenardier with painted on sideburns.

I'm just talking about his design. His character was alright, it's just.... everything about his face screams rat, not bulldog/tiger.

It was a very strange interpretation. Just like Valjean's apparent lack of a mouth. All he had was a moustache that jiggled up and down when he spoke.

SiameseCatLover In reply to Birikein [2010-05-03 14:02:08 +0000 UTC]
I mean, having a moustache is fine, but that's just downright lazy animating. It's almost as lazy as the cartoon version of Phantom of the Opera, where they would zero in on eyes as characters spoke or something so they wouldn't have to animate as much.

Hehe.. an animated Phantom?? It's possible that I saw a version years ago but can't remember. Would be cool to find an jp-anime version of the Phantom....

That could probably either be really good, or REALLY bad. I'm leaning toward the latter. They'd probably change the story and characters, and.... crap. Argh. Not something I would look forward to.
And yeah, Emerald City Production released a lot of hour-long cartoons of classic novels, like Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables, in ways that kids could understand. But.... Phantom was just weird. I mean, they did the book deformity (he looked kind of like a monkey) and everything, but Raoul had this weird black Elvis thing going on, the Persian looked like Osama Bin Laden, and Christine was like brunette Cinderella.

I think they made both Javert & Valjean too physical in the '98 version. I mean, Valjean BEATS UP Javert. Huh?! And then JV turns to the nun who starts freaking out and he's like, "She repented, didn't she? She made her peace with God."
That was a quick turn-around.

It's difficult to find a Javert like the one in the book. Tony is similar, but to handsome. (better or all of us) hehe

chloe625 In reply to Birikein [2009-10-07 19:04:24 +0000 UTC]
yeah I agree, Tony is awesome as Javert but not quite the same character from the book.
if you haven't already, check out the French 1934 film - it's long, and the Valjean is terrible (IMO) but the Javert is pretty book-like and it's overall one of the more accurate LM films I've seen.
also, it's on youtube: [link]
