Description
GunCrab (totes original name. Really)
OK so maybe it's a lazy riff on the CrabGunner, but pre coffee couldn't think of better, so that's my placeholder.
In the 2750s, the SLDF was looking into a posisble replacement for it's Rifleman and Galahad AA mechs. While both had their proponents, neither were quite "perfect".
One thing that was noted is that bipedal is inherently unstable. So the idea of making essentially a quad AA Battery was the premise. Instead of packing it to the gills with cutting edge, weight saving technology, emphasis was placed on simplicity and durability.
While rock solid at a rest, the masic crablike gait was still a bit of an issue when moving at flank, so the guns themselves were given special stabilizaed mounts, allowing for uncanny stability and accuracy. The design was also much harder to knock down, and trainers said that it took new pilots roughly 25% less time to master piloting the new design than a comparable Galahad.
Special emphasis was placed on protection and durability. Carrying 13 tons of armor makes it nearly twice as tough as a Rifleman. Additionally, each of it's cavernous magazines is CASE protected, while it's use of a standard engine likewise enhanced it's reputation for toughness and ease of maintenance.
For firepower, it mounts a pair of Luballin Ballistics 120mm Smooth Bore Cannons, each with a 3 ton magaine, allowing for far superior battlefield endurance than the Galahad or Rifleman. The guns can elevate a full 90 degrees and depress 15, allowing for fantastic tracking, tied into Wassat Agressor class 5 Targeting Computer, a system noted for being almost as effective vs aircraft as the fabled D2J. The guns are in special armored mounts, based losely off the "claws" of the King Crab, further protecting the guns themselves.
10 single heatsinks were considered more than enough to keep the mech running cool, but the system would work harder than expected, as the same covers that protect the ACs also reduced their ability to disipate heat. Another flaw was that the ball sockets joints jthat allowed it to manuever so well, proved especially vulnerable to infantry attacks.
A handful were deployed with Kerensky's forces when the Amaris Coupe occured, but the factory itself was a casualty of the Civil War. If any survived the Exodus is uncertain, but the design itself has been recently put back into testing at the Defiance Industries proving grounds. If the mech is deemed worhtwhile, it will likely be updated with the latest in weapon and armor technology.
Quirks:
(Positive)
- Anti-Aircraft Targeting
- Easy to Pilot
- Stabilized Weapons (LB-10X)
(Negative)
- Poor Cooling Jackets (LB-10X)
- Exposed actuators.
- Non standard parts
- Prototype (emove if machine enters production)
