Introduction
What makes a viewer interested in an anime series? The premise, perhaps? Maybe the gorgeous art style? But what can really get a viewer interested is the characters, and the best way to make a positive first impression is with character design.

So how can you make an effective character design? In this article, I will be going over some examples of effective design as well as giving advice to design your own characters and outfits. In addition, I will be walking through my own process of designing a character!

As a disclaimer, I am not a professional character designer; many of the things listed here are from personal experience as well as trial and error. I will also only be discussing examples from media based around anime and manga, including anime-styled games.

Without further ado, let's get started on our journey!

Examples of effective design

Here I've gathered a few characters who I think have really striking and informative designs.

Satsuki Kiryūin (Kill la Kill)

Just from a glance at Satsuki's character design, you can get a pretty good idea of what her personality is. One of the most noticeable things is her expression - her gaze is stern and commanding, emphasized by her thick eyebrows. This, as well as her posture, gives us the impression that she is serious and confident in herself.

We can also gain a lot of information about her character from her outfit choices and accessories. Her clothing is extremely reminiscent of a Japanese school uniform, with the sailor style collar, ribbon necktie, and pleated skirt, showing us that she is a high school student. However, this is accessorized with golden epaulets, which are traditionally worn as a symbol of rank by elite units in the armed forces which indicates her influence and battle prowess over others. This, in addition to the gold accents on her dress, show her status and wealth.

Ibuki Mioda (Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair)

Danganronpa has some of my favourite character designs due to how much they emphasize the specific talent of each character. Ibuki's design contains extreme contrasts in shape and pattern, but are all brought together by her simple and cohesive four-colour palette. The jagged and sharp edges of her silhouette give her a very "edgy" look, and though she wears a classic school uniform her choice of accessories brings out her eccentric personality and individuality. Her stockings and armwarmers have holes which look deliberately made, implying a rebellious nature. Overall, she has a very scene/punk aesthetic and clearly puts a lot of pride and care into her appearance. Her official art really brings out her quirks with her playful expression and whimsical pose, and shows off her talent as a musician (and love for heavy metal!).

A note about stereotypes
A stereotype is a collection of oversimplified images or ideas about a particular subject. It can be easy to fall into stereotypes when you design your character, especially if you're starting off with a general concept like "clumsy girl" or "cheerleader". Though this article is not about writing effective characters, it can be helpful to think about what would make your character more realistic and relatable when designing them rather than going off cliches. Having a good idea of your character's personality and motivations can be a great help when trying to avoid completely falling into stereotypes.

It's important to make sure that a character's traits are identifiable from their character design, but effective character designs often find a balance between incorporating concepts from a stereotype and including original, novel concepts into them. Though the following pieces of advice can give your design a strong visual identifier for a character's personality and role within their world, overdoing it and throwing in too many traits of a character trope into the design can make them appear cliched. So many concepts have already been done—how will you make your design your own?

Designing your character

A character's design should reflect their personality and background. It's often helpful to have an idea of what kind of person your character is before you even start sketching!
Some important aspects of your character's appearance should be:

Their body type: How old is your character? Are they athletic? Slender? This should also be dependent on their lifestyle - someone who trains or does sports often will obviously be more muscular than someone who is sedentary. It may also be helpful to think of the character's overall shape, such as if you want them to look more soft or harsh and angled.

Their hairstyle: How long/short is your character's hair? How well maintained is it? Characters who are refined or serious will often have neater hair, while characters who are more outgoing or care less about their appearance usually have messier or shaggy hair.

Bangs can also say a lot about your character - straight bangs can be used to hide a character's eyes, giving the impression that they are distant or shy, while traditionally "cute" characters often have messier bangs. In contrast, characters who are older or more mature often have their hair pushed away from their eyes.

The colour and style of the hair also plays a big part in the perception of your character. What is their natural hair colour, and if their hair is unnaturally coloured, is there a reason for it? Do they put in a lot of effort to style their hair in a unique way, or do they just let it loose? These are good questions to ask yourself when you design your character's hair.

Their face: The face is probably one the most telling characteristics of someone's personality. Younger, "cute" characters have rounder and softer face shapes, while those of older characters are longer and more angled.
Characters that are perceived as innocent or cute tend to have larger, round eyes. This also holds true for younger characters. In contrast, characters who are older or more serious have smaller, wider eyes, while characters that are mischevious or cunning often have angled eyes with more pointed shapes. Additionally, cute characters generally have larger irises than more mature characters.

Designing clothing for your character

A character's outfit should be reflective of their setting, social class, and personal style. For example, you wouldn't see many people wearing Victorian outfits while walking to school! It may be helpful to build up a collection of inspiration images around the setting your character is in for fashion reference.

While making sure your character fits into their setting is important, what really determines what kind of clothing they'll wear is their social class and profession. Nobles may like to show off their wealth by wearing a lot of rich colours or accessories, while those in the working class might dress more modestly. This may also influence the material of the clothing they wear. In terms of profession, it's important to ensure that the character's outfit is functional and makes sense in the context of their job. A businessperson would probably wear a suit or other formal clothing, a traveler would want to wear clothing that is light and easy to carry, and a fighter probably wouldn't want any loose accessories knocking around. Be sure to think about how suitable your character's outfit would be if they wore it in their day-to-day life.

How an outfit is worn can largely be influenced by a character's personality! Characters who are more diligent about their appearance will be more likely to wear their clothing neatly, while characters that care less may have wrinklier clothing that isn't worn properly (unbuttoned shirts, ill-fitting clothing, etc). The personality of the character may also influence how they accessorize and customize their outfits, like jewelry, belts, hair clips, piercings, etc.

General advice

⋆ Use references and inspiration from outside sources! It can be hard to design an outfit from just imagination alone. It's helpful to look at lots of examples of different characters and outfits you like and take inspiration from them!

⋆ Choose colours that reflect your character! For example, characters who wear red are often unafraid to stand out, pastel colours are usually used for cute characters, and characters with darker colours are often more serious or sinister.

⋆ Use a cohesive colour palette! Overly colourful characters can be jarring to the eye and detract from your character's main focus. There are lots of resources online to help you choose colours that go well with each other!

⋆ Don't over-clutter! It can be tempting to add lots of details to a character to make them look special, or just because you have so many ideas that you want to add to them! However, this can make the design look messy or incomprehensible. Cluttered or overly detailed characters can also be difficult to draw again. Try to focus on a few main themes you want to show through your design.

⋆ Make your design unique! What stands out about your character that distinguishes them from everyone else and makes them memorable? Maybe their charm point is their signature smile or a quirky fashion sense. Whatever it is, be creative and try to make your design reflect who your character is as a person.

⋆ Have fun! At the end of the day, you have full control over your character's creation. Feel free to put your own spin on existing fashion trends and be creative with your design!

Putting it into practice
Let's go through an example of how I design my characters from start to finish!

Let's say I want to design an alchemist who runs a potion shop. He is a kind, laid-back young man who loves reading and doing research.

First, I like to look online for inspiration. I build up a small mood board of the aesthetic and potential outfit features that I want!

Then, I start designing the character's appearance based on their personality. I want him to seem relaxed and mature, so I will give him softer eyes and expression and a longer face. I'll also give him slightly shaggy hair, as I'd like to think he'd focus on his research than worry about his appearance! I decided to give him a slim body type as he's a bit of a bookworm.

I like to do a few concept sketches before I decide on my favourite one.

I decided to go with the curly hair and droopier eyes since I really like drawing them!

Next is my favourite part - designing the outfit!

I wanted to give him a potion belt, with various types of bottles and perhaps small sachels to carry around herbs or powders.

I also wanted his design to have a long, flowy coat or a cape with gold decals, as I felt it would make him look more identifiable as a mage.

Other aspects of his outfit were inspired from fantasy games, TV shows, etc!

Again, I do several sketches until I decide on one I like.

After I finalize the overall design, I start picking colours! I decided to go for a warm, earthy palette for him because it gives a calm, mellow effect. Often when I get stuck on a palette to use, I'll take inspiration from sites like colourlovers or pinterest!

I add in any last-minute details that I want to incorporate such as the patterns on his cape and the book.

And with that, I present the final product!

Conclusion

There is no right or wrong way to design a character, but often the characters we connect with most are the ones with coherent and unique designs. A design can give away a lot of information about a character, and is also important in terms of functionality and expression of personality. Though this article is not at all a solid guideline to follow for creating a character, I hope that it provided a starting point and a bit of background on what a character's design should achieve!

Below are a couple more resources that might help you or give you some inspiration to assist with the creative process!

Unique Character Design Tips
In my opinion, these are the most important factors in any character design: color, concept, shape, simplicity, cohesiveness, repeatability, personality and uniqueness.

Color: Any design with colors all over the place creates too many places for the eye to look. Keep your color design very simple and zen. Looking at the colors shouldn't be jarring or confusing. This isn't to say only use one color, not at all, but try to make sure the ones you use are harmonious. Avoid mixing and matching different saturations of the same color or picking colors that clash with one another.

My rule of thumb: Stick to no more than three base colors and some Designing Adoptables - A tutorialAdoptables Week

Introduction to Adoptable creator work

Adoptable creator work is a highly creative and inspirational task where designing completely new concepts of characters is usually the goal. Designing characters for peoples needs and wants by bringing new and interesting characters is what it is all about. The adoptable market is widely spread with all kinds of themes and designs. At first glance it might seem hard to just hop in, start designing and selling. There are a few good things you should take into consideration before you start designing your own adoptables.

We're starting with the statement that the work usually requires a

What a great article--loved the bit about colors needing to reflect a character's personality as well. It seems fairly straightforward, but I'm occasionally surprised (sometimes pleasantly, sometimes not) about the color decisions on a character I see. Even smaller choices in secondary colors on a design can make a big impact in telling us what someone is like.

Thank you, thank so much for this! I honestly would never would have found myself making my own OC, and yet, here I am, haha. Guess those who have have rubbed off on me.

For me right now though, I personally need to continue doing gestures and studying poses again before even making a mood board or doing research. I could do still do that, otherwise I'd forget what inspired me in the first place but I'm not a strong drawer. Currently trying a new art style so to speak, yet ironically I need to practice my rendering and need to draw from life again. Also sorta found my art style too, but again I gotta practice.

And I love your alchemist, he's adorable! He kinda reminds me of Yukito from Cardcaptor Sakura.

Edit:

Also forgot mention this, but you sorta touch upon it already though when you mentioned wearing a practical outfit: When it comes to cosplay, a lot of times when we want to translate outfits from 2D to 3D I tend to hear that creators are only limited by their imagination as well but I'd imagine it differs to the design and whatnot.
