I have read recently how hard is to make good macaroons So once again i really respect this good looking photo and your culinary skills.
I have been featured this work and one more dessers (the irish cream cupcakes) in my journal [link]

Do you have a little studio area? How do think of these backdrops?

bittykate In reply to feetpeet [2009-08-22 15:20:01 +0000 UTC]

Nope. I shoot on a nasty old table by a window We've had it as long as I can remember.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by backdrops, so I'm going to ramble a bit....

For the overall background color I just try to chose something with a nice contrast. I really like the pink/green combo and I think I abuse it a bit, but it all depends on the shot and the light, I guess.

As for props, when I look through the viewfinder I gauge the fullness of the frame and adjust accordingly. I like how this series turned out, but it was because I got lucky and was able to find/create enough props within the color range to adequately fill the space. I try to keep adding [semi] related junk until it all seems heavy enough and like the shot's got enough substance.

In this photo, I knew I wanted to have a box to simulate the gifts boxes you get when you buy actual macarons, but I had to do quite a bit of prep to make it "fit." The box is saved from a gift my grandma gave me, and I taped the ribbon around it, then sewed up the same ribbon and pinned it to the box to make a bow. The tissue paper is actual tissue (it's the lotion kind ) because I didn't have any white tissue paper on hand, and there are two upside-down cupcake wrappers in the bottom of the box (under the tissue) to make the macarons pop out of the top.

What else.... Oh! The potted plant in the back is the mint that I've been growing since the beginning of the summer with some roses that I cut from the rosebush outside my door added in for color.

Wow. I talk a lot. I hope that I answered your question somewhere within my rant...

That exactly answered my question, thank you for sharing so much!!!
I ask because I want my food shots to look better with more props and background thought.

Very good atmospheric presentation, a bit elegant a bit girly, with that flower bouqet and in this packaging would be a lovely present for a summer birthday party or a housewarming

Really great job with the presentation and of course the mini macaroons. I'd buy it if I saw it in a store.

did u make the box??
how would u describe the texture of macaroons when eating them?? ive never tasted one

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bittykate In reply to MagueeTSN [2009-08-12 22:28:09 +0000 UTC]

No, I didn't make the box, but I decorated it a bit. lol. I taped the ribbon around the box, which was easy, but then I decided it needed a bow, which took a little more effort I folded the ends of a small piece of ribbon backwards, then sewed through it and wrapped the thread around the center to "pinch" it into a more classic bow shape. Then I pinned it to the box with a metallic pin. I wanted it to match

Macarons.... Are very sweet. The shells taste faintly of almond, but essentially serve as a vessel for the filling These ones taste like sweet, minty chocolateyness

they seem to be crunchy... like cookies maybe but with more air inside... more porous... like it cracks when you bite it.
anyways... im gonna try to make those when i have some money

Whoops - I answered your question completely wrong Sorry!
Yes, they've got a crunchy outer shell, and a chewy interior. The crunchy part is very thin like an eggshell and it does crack when you bite it

I do hope you try them

i got it, so i was right...
i dunno if this happens to u, i bet it does, but, when i see food, i can almost taste what they would feel like in my mouth, texture and taste, im talking about food ive never tasted, and im almost always right
i also tend to imagine what would go right together, and again, im always right!
i guess that's what happens with us cooks... its natural.

I'm kinda the opposite! lol I'm always desperately wishing I knew what something tastes like if I'm not familiar with it. Even if I know the spices/seasonings; I just have this feeling that it has to be completely different from anything I've ever had

I'm fairly decent at paring ingredients and flavors, but I think it's because I read so many cookbooks and watch "Top Chef" and "Chopped" too much

MagueeTSN In reply to bittykate [2009-08-13 02:45:31 +0000 UTC]

we only got the first season of Top Chef here, but ive never heard of Chopped other than on the E! channel

i dunno i always felt so familiar with food...
i mean, even flavors that i had never tasted, i would like sorta guess what they felt like, im always pretty close...
i tell you, when im over there, im gonna visit you and cook for you! im really good at combining food...
i just wish i had half of the things u have there to cook... i mean most of those things u tell us about, are really expensive here... :S:S not that is rare, but Argentina exports everything we have... :S a shame

Aw, bummer - Chopped is a cool show. It's a bit like Iron Chef, but there are four contestants and they're each given a basket at the beginning of each round (appetizer, entree, dessert) containing the same secret ingredients (sometimes there are like.... five. And they give them weird things sometimes - one time is was gummy bears!!). They each have to prepare a dish and each time, the last place contestant is booted off. I love it!

Sounds like fun!

I can't imagine That would make me so sad!! That is a shame! What kind of stuff can't you get?

MagueeTSN In reply to bittykate [2009-08-13 20:09:27 +0000 UTC]

raspberries... WHICH I LOVE! they r my favourites!!!
raspberries are really expensive here... u can never get them at the vegetables stores (those are called "verdulerias", look it up ) u can only get them in preserves, thats like 250 gr, half liquid half raspberries...
raspberries here are grown in Patagonia, places like Chubut, Rio Negro (argentinian provinces), cold places, and most of'em are exported, like our meat... we claim to have the best quality on meat in the world, but we export almost everything... that's why its so expensive...
nuts, dryed ingredients, honey, special flours, fruits, meat, utensils sometimes (like the cupcake metal molds i told u) ... we have almost sold ourselves...:S, the most important areas of our country are sold to Amrican tycoons...
luckily, they are starting to sell (in the verdulerias ) blackberries... by the quarter... they are kinda pricy, but i buy em when i can, and make blueberry sauce and blueberry pancakes... i cant make anything else cause i cant afford the quantity, im in a middle-class family... but im to ashamed to ask for money for food, cause i nspend so much at collegue sorry if this is too long

bittykate In reply to MagueeTSN [2009-08-13 23:46:08 +0000 UTC]

Gah - raspberries are expensive here too, but at least I can find them, I suppose! I can't imagine not having everything so readily available... I feel so bad

How is the economy there? Is it doing well because there is so much money coming in from exporting goods? What a shame!!

And blackberries are good, but they're even expensive here and sometimes very hard to find. They're usually $3.50-$4.00 for a 1/2 pint and I can never bring myself to buy them. My dad planted a blackberry bush in our yard, but it didn't produce any fruit this year... I haven't had any since this time last year!

I always feel terrible asking my parents for money too. They're going to help me with college and I feel so guilty about it because I don't know how it's gonna work... I told them I wasn't going to go because I'm not sure we can afford it, but they really want me to go.

Luckily my money from work has been able to cover my hobbies so far, but pretty soon I'll have tons of bills to pay for college and that will no longer be the case... We'll be in the same boat soon enough! lol Did you have a job before you started college?

Not too long at all!

Ive never had an ACTUAL job... i mean... this year i was going to work as a Costumer Service Agent, for Time Warner Cable, but the schedules at collegue wouldn't let me keep it... so that's that. And i work form time to time at a children's party house... and some for my dad, like graphic designer work... but nothing REAL, most of the money i need keeps comming from the same hands, my parents... see my parents are divorced since last year, but they are good friends, so they help each other with the money thing... well, my dad helps my mom the most, cause hes way better financialy, hes doing great, my mom is an english teacher, so her paycheck is not really helpful sometimes :S.
I have it easier than you though... the collegue i go to, is a community collegue, i mean it belongs to the State; the only things i have to pay is for utensils and printings; as i said in the past, i go to the best university in my country, one of the top 5 in Latin America, and has a lot to do with some of the most prestigious universities in your country...
for u to go to a good school, u have to pay :S:S i think that is one of the cons in the US.
u have to pay in community collegues as well??? cause in the program im in for au pairs, u have to pay for the courses.

Im looking for a job now... as a nanny, cause i need the experience

Aw, that's too bad I think my job at the bakery is on the rocks right now because of school. I will have some time to come in, but not much... But I have faith I will find something else. Maybe I'll just go back to fast food and work nights... It is difficult to find work when you're busy - I totally understand where you're coming from - and it's especially difficult to find something that fits your interests, which is so depressing.

Sorry to hear your parents are divorced! Mine are too, for about 10 years now. I'm happy yours get along pretty well though.

I definitely think they should do something about the cost of higher-level education here in the US. It's fantastic that you don't have to pay for the actual courses there!!! Yes, at our community colleges you have to pay for the classes and materials, about $4000 a year, not including a room or food. It's quite a bit of money no matter where you go!

yeah, it is a lot of money!
im doing a grad carreer, GD is not a course in the UBA... cause it has like a pre-carreer preparation and stuff...

im just tryin' to find nanny jobs... that'll cover my money issues and the experience i need
im currently haeving some driving lessons...
and my dad is willing to lend me his car to go anywere. i realy dont need it... i mean, here in Buenos Aires you have a great bus service... and subway to... also, my neighbourhood is a central one, so i can get anywhere i want with a bus... i have almost every bus here in Flores (my neighbourh.)... that'0s why i havent had driving lessons before, like you guy do, before u r 16 (plus we cant drive until we are 17), im kinda old though hehe. im almost 20
