It would seem that I forgot to mention that in my last collage, the second, third and fifth images were actually shots of the castle

But this would be my best front view, it shows the keep and right next to it the chapel, and it's what makes it unique among the castles...that, and the fact that it's the first of the castles of the Loire valley.
Châteaudun's name actually comes from castellum and dunum, the Roman and Celtic names for "fort". The fortified place certainly existed in the Roman era, and it's also attested documentary in the 6th century. The site is in a strategic position on the edge of the Beauce plain, at the crossroads of two important Roman roads, one connecting Tours and Chartres, and the other running between Orleans and Le Mans. Its location was chosen for its terrain, a rocky spur overlooking the Loire river.
