Yes i really want to get to a certain finish without killing the energy or whatever makes me feel like my painting is alive. And i'm sure it's possible but it will need some more time i suppose. As for wlop, yes i do know him. When i get fast enough and have a polish that i'm happy with. I definitely want to do some kind of comics. Be it like him a web comics or published. I don't know yet.
But first i need to concentrate on actual client work....and getting better so that i can get clients i'm actually interested in working with....

Lovely work! There's so much in each of these: fascinating compositions & camera angles, beautiful color palettes, great storytelling, energetic brushwork, and lots of style. I'm not entirely sure I'd want to see these pushed any further -- they are so excellent just as they are.Β

Thanks, i'm really happy you feel this way about it. I certainly tried very hard haha. But i know also that pushing further in the rendering part is something i will have to get good at to. I had more then my fare share of clients take somebody else because they are more interested in what they deem a finished looking product. And i completely understand why they would prefer something that looks more finished. But I'm working on it. One step at the time.

I personally love to see brushwork and loose mark-making in artwork, and the amazing feeling when you step back and it all clicks into place. But yeah, there seems to be a large majority out there who only appreciate very meticulous rendering.

Well the truth sadly is that we as painter, value the painting aspect of it. But most clients, want to sell a product and could care less if the product has any artistic value. If it has and looks professional and finished enough. Great. But it's not their priority. The illustration serves the product they are trying to make. We tend to value the illustration itself disregarding it actually has to serve a product.

I thought about it. It's definitely something i need to do since i feel the rendering part is my biggest weakness right now. I just don't know how i should go about it right know. I have two option. Either i take one or two of these and try to go as far as possible and loose a lot of time trying to get to the next level of finish. Or i start over with new Concepts and try to streamline as much as possible the beginning stages. Getting faster and faster in the beginning, and each time trying to go a bit further in the rendering part...each time a little bit further and a little bit faster. Β Either i do quantity or quality. Each have their pros and cons. But i feel somehow that i will learn faster by doing quantity right now. Because the more i do, the more problems i stumble upon and get to solve. Compare that to doing just one image. I get to solve only one problem at the time and might actually just fail to solve that one problem altogether wasting a lot of time.
There never is a right answer, and everyone learns differently. But for now i'm trying out quantity over quality. We'll see where it gets me.
How about you? What are your thought on it?

Yes that's what i do for now. And studys of course. I could do more of them haha. As for photobashing, i'm completely fine doing it in a professional setting, where time constraints ask for it. But I like paintings for the painting aspect of it. And photos just don't have that painterly aspect i want in my art. To me and it's completely personal. Photo-bashed pictures feel lifeless. That's a completely personal choice. But i prefer having my paintings less realistic but having control of every aspect of the painting till the end. Photos add noise and contrast where you don't always want them. So you end up changing your picture to match the photos...and it removes everything i like about painting. Maybe i'm just not good with photos. But for now. I rather paint it.
But of course, if you have to work quick and dirty for a studio who couldn't care less. Then do it. . I think these kind of things depend completely of what you want out of your paintings. And that is a choice everyone has to do for himself. Maybe i'll change my mind, you never know. Art is exploration after all.

you're right sometimes it can be counter-productive to use photos, and the feel of a full painted piece is amazing !
anyway i'm sure you'll get there very quickly !
( sorry for the late answer u.u )

Wah you didn't respond right away, how dare you have a life...haha
Don't worry, you could have responded two years form now, it would still be cool. I hope i'll get there and you too by the way..self absorbed bastard that i am. Or else i'll just suck it up and use photos like everyone else haha. I just hope you won't refrain using them if you feel it would fit in your workflow. It's all personal. I would hate it if somebody would think my opinion was the right opinion to have. Do what works for you and only you^^.
