Description After looking around DA I realised that I have not a single bit of Terry Pratchett fanart up. Criminal, I simply had to make a little image of my favourite character, the irreplaceable Rincewind. ^^

Came up with this image after remembering his only attempts at any sort of misplaced bravery is when there is a lady involved (which doesn’t happen often, and even then he is more then reluctant, assuming he hasn’t run out of the door already… )

The lines ‘Reluctant hero’ and ‘Frustrated coward’ are from a great Pratchett quote, damn he’s good.

In this image he tries to protect a woman by using an empty threat of using magic, as usual. And is even more scared then his attackers when something appears to happen.

Came up with a little story for these two, the girl is Aurora, Rincewinds opposite piece in the goddess’s ‘The Lady’s’ collection of mortal pieces, both used in games against the other gods of the Discworld. Aurora is a highly competent moral sorceress. However as sorcerers or sorceresses are feared and despised on the disc, and targeted by wizards, she hides her powers. However she can’t help but try to help people, so keeps getting into trouble. Not relying on luck she uses competence and practicality to get out of problems, but due to the scale of her situations she requires the aid of ‘The Lady’ on occasion, but fervently does not believe in such thing, much like Rincewind. She is the opposite of Rincewind in that she places herself in knowing harm without further consideration, knowing full well and accepting the consequences, her high morals dictating her actions.

They meet when Rincewind goes looking for the ‘luckiest person on the Disc’ as written in a small article in the Ankh-Morpork, paper. The article illustrates an event surrounding Aurora where she seems to be the innocent bystander in some remarkable events (actually orchestrated by her then covered up). Mistakenly thinking Aurora is some Dashing Hero and armed with a blunt instrument Rincewind hopes to take revenge on is opposite who he blames for being the karmic counterbalance to his miserable existence.

Looking for her in a small town he runs into her as she is being chased by local thugs and an assassin. Not knowing who it is Rincewind is about to run but is drawn to help her… Aurora uses her magic through Rincewind and the two escape. The story revolves around the two as they try to save the local people from a warlord or equivalent. (Spaghetti western/samurai style spoof. (Rincewind ever reluctantly.)

Eventually they succeed and find that they were drawn together by a very interesting coincident. Both were subconsciously looking for someone to accept them for who they are. And as it would turn out the odds of either of them doing so would be…. 1,000,000 to 1.

Yay for hopeless romance

(Feel free to run with the idea anyone… only a small chance I would ever write the fan-fiction)

Ummm I have news for you, but despite the fact that Rincewind is a Wizzard, he is about as good at magic as he is at spelling.

The only way hed be able to do that spell would be if it was one of the Great Eight Spells, and nobody wants to see that.  Up close anyways.

Very true...

If you read the description you would realise it is actually the girl who is doing the magic, and using Rincewind as a patsy…

As for today, I have read every single one of the novel series, sans I Shall Wear Midnight(not yet out in my country).

Looking at this artpiece again, I think that it truly would be fitting, and canonical, for something like this to happen to Rincewind.

So, in this scenario of yours, our favourite coward decides, before the next adventure sweeps him up into its talons and digs in its fangs containing the venom known as Excitment, to conduct a pre-emptive strike to his karma. Find whatever or whoever it is who is responsible for his adventurous life, the one thing that has kept him from blissful, peaceful boredom, and destroy it.
And instead that thing would turn out to be the most captivating, exciting, and dangerous adventure in his life. And, to his astonishment, it is an adventure that, despite the terror it instils in him, is one that he truly enjoys and hopes that it will never end.

I think that, after manipulating him throughout his life just to win board games and build a reputation, The Lady would feel that, maybe, just this once, she give her favourite game piece a reward for all his many, many troubles.

I truly hope that you'll take up this potential story. It would be a great tribute of appreciation to the World's Worst Wizard and Best Coward for all the laughs he's brought to us Discworld readers(Interesting Times is the novel out of the 38 in which I've laughed the longest an' the hardest while reading it. Hogfather comes close, though I'm not certain to place it at No. 2).

Thank you for creating this wonderful artpiece an' excellent story idea, an' I pray that this story will come to life one day.

Many thanks for the detailed reply, If I ever get around to writing it, I'll send a note ^^

As for the description, pretty much spot on. I think the idea of someone continually voluntarily getting into harms way and nevertheless seemingly having a peaceful and mundane existence would strike him as 'fundamentally' unfair... and worthy of revenge, if he felt there was a tangible connection to his continuing woes...

Rincewind is known to have some strange ideas on occasion, got to love him... plus I think it would be one of the hardest love stories to write… (just typing that about Rincewind seems wrong! ^^) a good challenge he he

Chow,

Biz

There is a scene in 'the light fantastic' which is a lot like this pic. If twoflower was somewhere nearby it could pass for an actual deception of it.

1000000 to 1? Well, wizards theorize 1000000 to 1 situations turn up 9 times out of 10

The universe just loves to gravitate towards specific, probabilities, its just one of those things... at least the Discworld has their, playing, gods as an explanation ^^

Fine bit of work indeed. I'm not much of a reader, but I know of Terry Prachett from my Dad's books, he loves reading!

Anyways, fantastic bit of work indeed. Your colouring remains brilliant, and the poses for Rincewind and Aurora work perfectly, and the facial expressions go really well with them. Very good designs too. The magic effect is great as well.

Nice back-story with a good twist on the character. Have you ever seen the Art of the Discworld book? That's how I always imagine Pratchett's characters when I read his novels.

I have seen some of it. I’m so used to the regular cover artist I always imagine a very ‘ugly’ or distorted discworld universe. Still though, my mind usually transforms them into something more comical.

I've read Thud and Wintersmith and I certainly intend to read more. Vampire character is my fav (name slips my mind). This picture looks good as usual with lovely colours however the man on the right looks like he has two left hands. Minor detail but it is kind of noticable.

He he, point about the right hand. From that angle the thumb could disappears below the hand. But I think I forgot about that when colouring the other side and not removing a line that does indicate his thumb is on the wrong side… damn, I have a habit of missing that occasionally, I usually check and change… goes to show, never rush.
