Description When he and Airic arrived at home Simon and Izzy were there. Simon was in the kitchen downing straight scotch from the bottle while Izzy screamed at him for something.
“I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU SIMON! YOU PROMISED! YOU PROMISED!” Izzy’s voice broke and tears started falling from her eyes. Airic rushed to her side and threw her arms around Izzy.
Simon turned around, his eyes were blood shot and he looked as if her were about to fall over. His words slurred together as he attempted to speak, “I’m soryiz, ididn’t meanto, it jus appened.”
“JUST HAPPENED MY ASS!”
Jamie yanked the scotch bottle out of Simon’s hands and tossed it into the sink where it shattered and started flowing down the drain. “I’m going to take a wild guess here and say that you did something horribly wrong.”
Simon smiled at Jamie. “You’re my bess fren ya know tha Jamie?” Simon hiccupped and opened his arms wide to give Jamie a hug.
Airic turned to Izzy in her arms, “What the heck happened here? We leave for a couple days and everything falls apart.”
Izzy wiped her eyes and started explaining. “I came home to him with that Amanda girl here. He said she was looking for Jamie. If that’s true then why was she straddling him on the couch?”
Simon smiled innocently. “I told ya she was lookin’ for Jamie. It’s no my fault she wanted me.”
Jamie rolled his eyes. “May I?” He asked Izzy.
“Be my freaking guest.”
Jamie raised his hand and backhanded Simon across the face to snap him out of his drunken stupor.
“What was that for!” Simon’s voice was suddenly slur free. He glared at Jamie and crouched prepared to spring.
“You needed to snap out of it.” Jamie shrugged.
Simon growled long and low. His hands formed into fists. “It’s not like I did anything Iz. I got her off if you’ll remember correctly. You know I love only you. This whole damsel in distress, ‘oh he doesn’t love me’ act is really getting on my last nerve. I’m not going to leave you, I’m not going to cheat on you, you stole my heart long ago and now it’s yours forever.” His anger was burning under his pretty head of hair.
Izzy seemed hurt by the ‘damsel in distress’ crack. She frowned and turned away to start shaking with sobs again. “I’m sorry; it’s just hard to believe with you sometimes. You’re so dismissive and you reject me every time I try to get somewhere with us. It seems like you don’t care.”
Simon sighed. “Iz, I could never not love you. It’s just an impossible thought. You can’t force me into something I’m not ready for. Like a marriage for example. I have to work my way up to that. It isn’t going to happen over night okay? But, I promise, one day when we’re older I will marry you.”
Izzy hissed. “Promises! You break every promise you ever make to me! We’re never getting older Simon. If you didn’t read the hand book I think it’s time, we are frozen at this age forever now. You don’t get to wait to grow up.”
Simon rolled his eyes behind her back. Jamie glared at him and raised his hand again slapping it on the other twice. Simon bared his teeth but put them away and walked to Izzy and wrapped his arms around her. “Listen to me Iz, I didn’t mean physically older. Mentally older is more accurate. If I’m not ready for that then what’s the point in making you unhappy? I don’t want you to be miserable if I can help it.”
“Your words hold everything I want to hear Simon but I’m waiting for the actions to back them up. I’m miserable as is. Walking in to see another girl in your lap wasn’t exactly the high point of my life.” Izzy mumbled something to herself that Jamie couldn’t hear.
“Izzy just give me a chance to think about this. Okay don’t push me too far, I’m not flexible enough to handle some of the things you want. I was raised not to believe in marriage. Ask Jamie, Finbar went through at least seven wives in my human life time. Nothing ever lasted. I want us to last, I’m not sure marriage is the way to do that.”
“Well the whole thing is a trust issue then isn’t it? You don’t think I’ll stay after we’re eternally bonded? Is that what goes through your head? You don’t trust my love for you?” Izzy turned so she could see Simon’s eyes.
“It’s got nothing to do with trust! Okay! Just leave me alone!” Simon unraveled his arms and sprinted from the room and up the stairs. There was a slamming of a door that shook the entire house all the way down to the foundation.
Izzy collapsed into a chair at the table her head dropping into her hands. “I don’t know what I do that makes him act like this.”
“Me either Izzy, it’s just a man thing I guess.” Airic said rubbing her arm in comfort.
The door bell rang. Jamie almost ran from the room to get away from all the emotions. He knew who was on the other side of the wooden door before pulling it open. The smell was so strong. He yanked open the door almost pulling it off the hinges.
Ben’s head was hanging and he looked down at his shoes. His blond hair was falling so Jamie couldn’t see his eyes or what expression his face held.
“Hey Ben,” Jamie said.
Ben’s head whipped up at an alarming rate. “Jamie!”
Jamie walked outside and closed the door. “You sound surprised that I would be at my own house.”
Ben smiled and looked down at his Adidas again. “Well it’s just that you haven’t been in school, and I wasn’t sure what was going on. After what I told you a few days ago I thought you’d pulled a Riley and run for it.”
“Nope, didn’t run, at least not yet,” he smiled at Ben. “I just had to go to Ohio for a few days and visit some…family I guess. No big hullabaloo.”
“Oh, well then I guess it was kind of weird of me to come over here and check up on you.”
Jamie sighed. “No it wasn’t weird. Trust me I would have done the same thing had I been you. Did you miss me Ben? Is that why you’re here?”
Ben glared at the smile on Jamie’s face. “Are you mocking me?”
“No, I just think it’s funny we’ve known each other for a total of about a week and we’re already missing each other.”
“You missed me?”
“Oddly, yes. I don’t like being away from you. It gets me antsy. Like at any moment my mind is going to explode because I can’t make sure you’re not like dying or something.”
Ben smiled now in a mocking fashion. “Aw Jamie, missing little old me? How cute. You must like me back.”
“Ha, ha.” Jamie’s voice was low and monotone. “So now that you’re here what do you want to do?”
“I don’t know? Watch a movie or something. I had practice earlier, I’m beat.”
“Sure we’ll hang in my room.” Jamie said opening the door behind him and leading the way upstairs.
He and Ben spent the afternoon upstairs. They laughed about the funny movie they were watching. Jamie’s eyes never left Ben. He was always watching the smile break over the pale face, always watching the eyes sparkle in the light coming through the window. Jamie was a sick person. His heart was screaming for him to do one thing while he teeth and blood lust brain were telling him not to hold back and see how bad the taste would be.
Ben seemed to be happy with Jamie around. His smile never fell and he never stopped laughing. Jamie wondered what the days before had been like for Ben. Had he sat alone at lunch wondering where Jamie was? Interesting though it was that Jamie was deluding himself into thinking that Ben held the same affections for him, he still loved the thoughts that went along with the delusions.
Ben was babbling in the background of Jamie’s mind. He wasn’t brought back to the present until he heard Simon’s name. “…Simon and Izzy were really nice while you were away. I got to know them a little bit at lunch yesterday.”
Well that answered one of Jamie’s questions. “Really? What did you guys talk about?”
Ben shrugged. The ending credits to the movie started rolling so he turned around to face Jamie on the floor. “Nothing much, they just told me where you guys moved from. I was a little surprised though. You don’t seem like someone from New York. From all I’ve heard they’re supposed to be anal people with anger problems.”
Jamie wasn’t surprised at all that Simon and Izzy had made up a false story to satisfy Ben’s curiosity.  “Yeah, well I guess you were wrong on that count. I’ve only ever encountered pleasurable people while I lived there.”
Ben stared out the window. “I’ve always wanted to go to New York.”
“Then why haven’t you?”
Ben picked at the sole of his shoe and shrugged again. “No money,”
Jamie frowned. He had never known that. He had always had money when he needed it and then some. His father Declan had left everything he owned to his eldest son who was Jamie. Paxton came along he and Jamie’s mother, Abel died the year before Jamie was turned immortal everything they owned was passed to him. His sister’s inherited nothing but married rich leaving them with no reason to complain. Now Jamie had money flowing in from years and years of time on the earth, he enjoyed betting on horse racing and dappling in the stock market when he was playing the role of someone old enough to have stock. His money was sealed away only to be used in emergencies. In fact Maddox pumped in his own money for Jamie leaving him with large sums that he never knew existed.
“Oh, well, I could take you if you really want to go.” The words were out and Jamie couldn’t believe he had said them. This offer was a dangerous one. Things could happen on this trip. Jamie could lose control.
“I might have to take you up on that one day.” Ben smiled then stood up his eyes still focused on the window. “I better get going.”
Jamie rose from the floor where he had been sitting. “Okay,”
They stood in the room not looking at each other. Both waiting for the other to say what they were too shy to say out loud.
Ben turned away from the window. He faced Jamie and smiled. “This is the part where you offer to walk me out to the car, or give me a hug and shove me out the door.”
“Do I get any other choices?” Jamie said making a joke.
Ben laughed. “Sadly there aren’t many choices in our lives.”
Ben had said ‘our lives’ not ‘his life’, not ‘your life’, but he had said ‘our lives’. Maybe in Jamie’s mind this meant him to think in a way that meant ‘our’ as in ‘you and me together’. “Well then, decisions, decisions.” Without thinking he grabbed Ben’s shoulders and hugged him awkwardly around the midriff. Ben laughed when Jamie let go and walked slowly to the door.
“You know you could come over to my house some time.” He said with his hand on the door examining a dent in the wall where Jamie had violently thrust a shoe at a few days ago.
“I know, I just feel comfortable here I guess.” Something in the back of his mind made itself known. “Oh! I have something for you!” Jamie rushed over to his dresser where he had thrown the rose from his first day in Maine. It was withered and blackened, a symbol of how his heart was reflected in a mirror. He thrust it into Ben’s hand and looked away.
Ben examined it then put it in his pocket smiling. “Bye Jamie.” And then he left. Jamie listened to him walked down the stairs slowly. Ben said ‘goodbye’ to Simon and Izzy as he passed them then left through the front door. Jamie watched as he got into his car and drove away. Jamie watched until the Jeep was a little black speck on the road down below
