Description
“Follow me,” Ben ran through the dark forest. He didn’t seem worried about where they were, his feet kept carrying him over the roots sticking out of the ground in the middle of the path.
“Ben wait I think we should stop.” Jamie looked back the dark path. Every step took them farther into to the dangerous forest and farther away from the safe haven of civilized society.
Ben turned and smiled but continued walking backwards. “Jamie have a sense of adventure once in a while.”
Jamie frowned and stopped walking. “I don’t want you to get hurt; can we just go back, please?”
Ben laughed then broke off at a run into the thickets and bushes off the path. Jamie growled and followed. If they made it out of this creepy, ominous feeling forest alive he would slaughter Ben. His mind and heart were sick with worry as he strained his eyes into the trees trying to find the glow of Ben’s pure white skin.
Ben poked his head out from behind a tree. “Come on Jamie!” He laughed then scurried off down a steep hill that led into an open field where they could see sun shining.
Before Jamie could get to the bottom of the hill he heard a loud snap and a cry of pain. He kicked up the speed leaving a trail of dust behind him.
The field was sunny and empty of all trees. The grass was short and a violent green and every few feet a dandelion was protruding out of the ground. Jamie could hear birds singing and the quiet rush of a stream near by in the trees. A feeling of calmness and peace filled his still heart and his face broke into a smile until his eyes fell on Ben laying in the center of the clearing.
His face was contorted in pain and tears were starting to well in his eyes. Ben reached his hand down to his leg where blood was gushing from. Next to him was a large branch, near that was an overturned birds nest with bits of broken egg shells all through it.
Jamie took in the scene with a calm façade. Ben was laying on his back crying and broken but there was nothing Jamie could do for him. Jamie didn’t breathe knowing that the smell of Ben’s flowing blood would over take his self control easily.
“Jamie,” Ben called out his voice was weak.
Jamie’s eyes flicked to Ben’s face.
“Jamie,” Ben winced in pain. “It really hurts.”
“I know Ben, I’ll help you I promise.” Jamie’s heart was being torn apart at the seams as he watched the boy he loved scream in agony because Jamie couldn’t stop him earlier. Jamie thought back to his survival hand book that he had read once on a night when he couldn’t sleep. Make a splint, stop the bleeding, then get help. Jamie rushed around the little field looking for two sticks he could use. Every time he had them and was rushing back to Ben’s sides he dropped the sticks and they disappeared into the green grass.
“Jamie!” Ben’s voice was calling.
Jamie ran to his side and collapsed next to him. “What do you need?”
Ben groaned in pain. “Just forget it, get me out of here!”
“Okay,” Jamie took a deep breath instantly he realized this as a huge mistake. The smell of Ben filled him up and his mouth started watering and his eyes turned bright red then started burning with the feeling of venom. He hadn’t realized he was that thirsty and he hadn’t brought any blood with him. His eyes fell on the blood flowing from Ben’s leg and he had his resolve. With out thinking Jamie clamped his teeth over the wound and took a long drink.
Ben’s eyes widened in fear, “Jamie what are you doing?”
Jamie didn’t answer as he took another drink. The life was draining from Ben and Jamie knew this well but didn’t stop. His body was being filled and he was enjoying it. Ben’s eyes drooped closed and his breathing became rasps until finally it stopped altogether. Jamie kept drinking until he was full. Then pulling back he realized what he had done.
Ben lay empty and lifeless. His face was never to break into the beautiful smile that Jamie loved dearly. Ben’s eyes were never to meet Jamie’s in a moment so private everyone else in the room would have to look away. The beautiful hands would never again grasp Jamie’s and the arms would never be constricted around Jamie’s waist in a tight hug. The voice would never be heard again, Jamie would never hear the words his heart had longed for, for so long. Ben would never love Jamie again.
“NO!” Jamie shook awake in a fury as his voice rang through the dark room. His heart raced and his breathing came quick and short. His eyes adjusted to the dark and he looked around coming to the consensus that he was alone. “It was just a dream.” He breathed out slowly and collapsed back onto the pillows. He slowed his heart rate and remembered the dream he had just endured. “Never,” Jamie spoke to himself. “Ben, I promise I will never let that happen. You’ll never know that pain. Never.” Jamie rolled over onto his side knowing that sleep was not going to come back to him.
