Aleythir is not magic; it can be studied, falsified, used as a basis for predictive models, and it conduces with all known laws of physics which squarely lands it within the purview of science. However, many people do not understand this or they may not believe it and thus, aleythir is often seen as magical, especially by nors (those who cannot directly and willfully sense and/or manipulate aleythir). As such, many practices have arisen around aleythiric activity that may appear superficially "magical".

Some of these practices can be downright predatory, playing off the ignorance of those who do not know any better. A psychic may pretend to know when someone will be "visited by death" but in reality, it is impossible to know when someone will die unless there are obvious symptoms a psychic might sense through the ley (such as a weak heart or cancer and such). An ethyric might sell "magical" cures to the ignorant when they're really peddling naproxen, acetaminophen, cephalexin, and other such ordinary medications made to look "magical" by coating them in mica-based pearlescent pigments. Mystics are perhaps the most adept at trickery being that they can manipulate electromagnetic radiation via myst which allows them to create a near-infinite variety of illusions and optical effects.

Sometimes, aleythai (those able to willfully and directly sense and/or manipulate aleythir) will perform elaborate "rituals" that are totally unnecessary but great for a show. Here, an ethyric has collected some corpse fingers, moldering bone broth, a dead lizard, and a few "totems" to create some standard pain relief medications. The ethyric could absolutely make the medications without any showmanship but many nors expect a grand display of power and if they don't get it, they may ironically become skeptical of the aleythai's abilities.

The "spell tome" is made mostly from ordinary materials such as leather and parchment, all lacquered for effect. The eye is a simple marble. The skulls and claws are real. Inside, the "spells" are just chemical formulae commonly used by ethyrics; glucose, naproxen, cephalexin, cyanoacrylate, glyserol, methanol, etc etc, all neatly organized.

Most aleythai are quite capable of making an honest living without resorting to trickery and most do but weaker aleythai or those not possessed of a robust conscience may resort to dishonesty.

Everything was laid out for The Ritual. Dead Man's Fingers, and Lizard in the Earth for a Moon's rot. Eleven coins from Thieves Caught, and card from a Cheat Murdered. The Trigram drawn, and... well, shit, the Wolfsbane was missing!

Too late the Witch turned away and left to cut it fresh, for already The Book of Lies awoke...

Tell me more about the Book of lies.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BJPentecost In reply to LudedWolf [2017-01-21 03:28:33 +0000 UTC]

When you pick it up, it tells you lies about yourself. Some of them are innocuous. Some of them, not so much. Imagine opening it up and seeing "the man you call father is, in fact, your father" or "your long lost sister is dead." Could make a really interesting plot device for a story.

Heck yeah, btw, I LOVE all your 'conversations'. XD

They totally rock, but you could ease a little with the vocabulary, there are many innocent kids who look at this things and end with trauma. (specially religious)

Although I'd love to see how you imagine Satan, since I haven't seen a description.

BJPentecost In reply to Zenet2527 [2014-08-13 23:01:42 +0000 UTC]

Kids aren't so innocent these days, especially the religious ones. XD Besides, there are far, far worse things that could happen to them. Like being molested by priests! D: Still, I suppose I should mark these as mature or maybe separate them from the actual paintings.

GruntMaster98 In reply to BJPentecost [2014-09-13 19:29:27 +0000 UTC]

Why aren't religious kids innocent? And why is that funny?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BJPentecost In reply to GruntMaster98 [2014-09-13 23:09:02 +0000 UTC]

Not very many kids are "innocent" these days, if they ever really were, and I wouldn't say it's funny so much as sad.

Sevian In reply to BJPentecost [2018-08-29 16:25:40 +0000 UTC]

Most "innocent" kids aren't nearly as innocent as they might otherwise appear.

Yeah, but I know some REALLY little kids that love looking at child stuff on dA and end up with baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad stufff.

Which sometimes is heaven for the craziness in my mind. XD
