Description This is a photo from the 1920's, taken in my grandfather Nicola's shoe repair shop in Brooklyn, New York. My great uncle Vito is the one in front of the cash register. Notice the tin ceiling and the art deco style light. My favorite part of the photo is the little birdcage hanging near the sign that says "Positively No Trust". The door led to a tiny kitchen where they used to cook their lunch everyday. I lived on the top floor of the building that the shop was in.
My grandfather used to call me "Mariuch", an affectionate nick name. I found this great song on youtube, hope you enjoy it!

You listened to it! Mariuch Make-a the Hootchie-ma-kooch! I'm glad we did not have
to use google translator for that one, lol.

I vaguely remember similar stores in Wildwood, NJ...when I was a child

When I was a kid, every neighborhood had one or two of
these shoe repair shops. You can't find one now.

offbeat-art-dog In reply to BklynGirl [2012-10-27 00:49:59 +0000 UTC]

no....I don't think that they even repair shoes anymore...lol.

I was a little vague before....I really meant that I used to see little...I guess that they would be called grocery stores....that resembled the shop in your photo...I knew that your photo was a shoe repair shop....it just looked similar.

I love true nostalgia like this. They don't put so much into the architecure of buildings nowadays and you would never get an electric till to look like that one.
I bet the smell of the leather was wonderful to experience each day. There is a lot to be said for today's technology but in some ways maybe the 'Olden Days' were better

How nice of you to comment! I agree wholeheartedly with you...hardly a day goes by
that I don't wish there were no cell phones, etc. Things just seemed calmer in the
olden days. (one of my favorite phrases). I'm so happy you enjoyed the photo!

Mio nonno era calabrese, e mia nonna era di Napoli. Questi sono i miei genitori, padri. Parte di mia madre è tutta siciliana. Una combinazione, no? LOL. Sono così felice che ti piace la foto!
Spero che tu abbia un fine settimana meraviglioso!

LOL True that!!! FYI, the shop was on 40th Street and 5th Avenue, in Sunset Park. I lived one block from the park. St. Michael's Catholic School...great neighborhood, and great memories.
