I occasionally look at this artists' work because they're one of the few who ever have talking Pokémon with their trainers that isn't a Nuzlocke.

A Nuzlocke is basically a grimdark gameplay but not really, but you play the Pokémon games with these set rules:
1.  Other than your starter Pokémon, any Pokémon you run into you catch immediately and put into your party.  You can't choose who you want.
2.  If any of your Pokémon faints in battle they are considered dead and you must released them. (Or in my personal opinion, you can just embrace the jerkish Trainer personality and admit that you released weaklings and say they have no room for your team).
3.  Just beat the game with these rules.
Ahead are rules that I'm unclear about that may be optional.
a.  You battle with tourney rules, meaning you have to not use the Switch option which allows you to switch Pokémon before the CPU opponent brings out the next Pokémon.
b.  Items are not allowed.
c.  If all your Pokémon "die" then you "die" as well meaning this is a complete game over.
d.  You can't catch more Pokémon to be ready to switch out when one of your Pokémon "dies."

I think that's all, but as you can see with the self-imposed Permadeath rule, you can probably guess why I don't like Nuzlocke runs and to make matters worse, a lot of people seem to make stories and comics based off of these runs for the... "unique concept."  To make things even more worse is that some of these stories have Pokémon communicate with humans just like mytrainerisanidiot, and it just makes things even more cruel in my opinion.  This is one of the reasons why I like this guy's tumblr for having Pokémon talk to humans without the deadly risk of dying in battles and making the Pokémon game much more darker than it needs to.

well that stupid. Why would people self-challenging themselves to something so pointless?

speaking of permadeaths, why would some games have those features/mechanics? one lose and all is lost?

Other than the "challenging and unique playstyle," I don't think I can figure out a better reason besides those and "getting better at tourney play."

Some games have permadeath like Fire Emblem, are probably meant to make sure you play smarter and to show actual consequences of people actually dying and their impact on everyone.  Rougelike games on the other hand... I... don't know.
