This is my first time, so any comment or critique is welcome. I'm especially wondering if the grey is overpowering or if it is too dark/light.

Thanks to everyone,

First of all I like the title of the picture which fits perfectly to your photo. The seashell is pretty and you caught the right angle. But the hole in the background irritates me. If the hole would be on the same line like the whirlpool it would not be so confusing. Try to photoshop it. But in conclusion the photo is neat and the grey is fine

I wasn't sure what this was in the thumbnail. I like the composition, but that thing on the left is distracting, maybe clone it out. The gray isn't overpowering in my opinion. Might look cool if you did an HDR

Spirals are very hypnotizing to look at and I think you captured that feeling very well

It's a really lovely image - but as others have said before me, the hole (or what it is?) behind the shell is a bit distracting. Other than that, I really like this photo, especially the clipping

I love seashells, particularly this kind.

This picture looks a little unbalanced to me. It is strange because both sides aren't overly dark or overly bright... maybe it is the textures and the massiveness of the shell that make it heavy on the right to me. I would suggest rotating it 90 degrees clockwise so that the shell is at the bottom and this is balanced left to right. Also, I think the background needs to be darker to loose the vertical lines a little bit and let the eye follow the spiral slowly.

Hope this is helpful to you.

The swirl is great but you have to do something about that background. The green thing in the background is droving my attention.

I really like the focus. I do think that the background and the shell blend too much together.

Just so everyone knows the shell is from Prince-Edward-Island in Canada and is about the size of a fist.

As for all the comments on the backround, it's a wood deck and the 'knot' is a nail. I'll be seeing if I can get rid of it in Picnik.

Thanks for all the comments!!

I actually like the background. About the colours, I wouldn't change it, because I think the greyish overall tone gives the photo a sort of harmony, if this makes sense.

I like the grey color here, but maybe some highlights would be good on the shellfish

What, the grey in the shell of the grey of the wall? In either case, I don't think it's too overpowering or light, for that matter. In fact, I really like how wel the different colours in the shell work together.

The hole/thing in the wall is very distracting though. If you're going to blur your background, you should make sure that it doesn't have imperfections like these. As it is, that thingy really draws your gaze away from the focus.

I love how you didn't put the shell in the middle, you've got a nice sense of composition.

I would like to see a little more focus and sharpness on the shell, sometimes it doesn't feel quite as clear to me as it could have been, but overall, beautiful photo!

You did a great job on the smooth colours

I agree with Lilith40; the hole in the wood is distracting from the beautiful shell, because it's imperceptible what it should be.
Cheers

I love collecting shells, where did you get that one from? When I laid eyes on this drawing, I saw the shell but my eyes immediately wondered to the background. I was thinking more about the background and the hole in the wall then the shell.

It seems like you were trying to get the top of the shell to be the focus point of the drawing? Well I think you could crop out some of the background to make that happen.

I was trying to focus on the top of the photograph. I love it's texture .

I think you did very well, but there's knot in the wood behind the main focal object (a shell?) that's a little distracting. Other than that, I would put more of the object in the frame. :3
