Pirates. I love them.HOWEVER, i hate when people would prefer to compare artists as opposed to commenting on the piece in itself. SO[!] moral of the story, dont mention Vasquez, Dirge, or Burton.

I like how his eye is what draws the eye to the piece. it's big and white and contrrasts the rest of the darker shading. the way it connects to the hat really helps carry the eye through the rest of the pictures. it carries the eye (of the viewer) very well.

The detail is amazing. Your way of drawing bodies, thin limbs with large thick ends such as feet or hands, is very inspiring. I can't find anything wrong with it...very, very well done.

Awesome. I love the angles in the face. Cute and mischevous at the same time! The dark shading on the cape/robe/thing makes his legs kind of hard to see on first glance though. Overall fantastic work, very original, wouldn't think of comparing it to other artists.

I believe that evryone has some defined originality inside them. Some people might think your art is comparable to someone else's, particularly to famous artists, but it is merely because they are used seeing this kind of art drawn by these people, and thus when they see your artwork, they tend to compare it to their known artists...
I think it's stupid, trying to link or pin point the artist someone might have idolized or favored, not thinking that, 'hey, maybe this artist really drew like this form the very start' I mean, it's as if they find it hard to believe that someone else might actually draw like their idol, possibly be even better.
now I'm ranting...

Looks like a gorllaz character in a pirate costume. Nice fuzion of different times it makes in the end. Although I must say I so preffer Ur colored pic's. Not that I dont like b/w works, U just seem to put so much meaning to the colors. It just has a stronger express rate with the colors on.
Anyway, its a great pic.

Mmm.... I'm not trying to start all sorts of shizzy trouble (and for the record I don't think I've ever compared your stuff to Jhonen or Burton), but comparing artistic styles isn't necessarily a bad way of talking about artwork, since art develops the same way everything human develops: on top of other stuff. Like any scientist, no artist develops in a void.
No style is an island.
But to try and be relavent, I like the pencil-y sketchyness of this one. I've been a fan of slighty dirty artwork (not like that, get your mind out of the gutter!)

and i wouldn't have known them if people didn't mention them all the time. damn those people.

very nice shading in this. suprised how you shaded it so well with a mechanical pencil.
i usually sharpen mine 50 times before the pic is done --- then again - i haven't done anthing as well shaded as this for the longest time. saves on pencil cost. hehe

One of the bestest pirate drawings I've seen in a long time, and we all know how i love my pirates.
He's even got a lil treasure chest....although from the look on his face it seems apparent that he stuffed a body in it and not any gold...interesting.

Ohh, you wanted an advanced critique... sorry. Well, the first thing I noticed on the drawing was the eye, which is the focal point... I don't believe you had to outline the "shine" in the eye, as it is the whitest part of the picture in the first place. Otherwise, it is a very well-drawn piece.
