Yes that part was repulsive, but there's a lot more to a person than how they treat their love interest. Here are some qualities I've observed about him:

Open-minded. He asks Saphir for his opinion, listens to Wiseman's advice, and then makes a decision after considering both viewpoints. 

Trusting. This is both a strength (he correctly thinks that Saphir would never betray him) and a weakness (he wrongly thinks that Wiseman is loyal to the clan).

Cautious. He doesn't just blindly assume that the enemies are weaklings. Before Esmeraude set off to the 20th century, he warned her to remember how Rubeus died and be cautious.

Patient and calm. He gives time for his subordinates to carry out their plans, even after initial failures. He doesn't lash out at them. This contrasts with Queen Beryl, who threatens and kills subordinates who are actually getting things done, just not as well as she wanted. 

Confident/arrogant/fearless. Despite being capable of complex plans (he did cooperate with Wiseman's schemes for a long time), he prefers to be forthright, confronting issues head on. He straight up tells Wiseman that he will deal with him for murdering Saphir, after they have accomplished their clan's goals. His words when they start fighting are also quite memorable: "If you think you can kill the leader of the Black Moon, give it your best shot!"

Cares about subordinates. Despite being annoyed by Esmeraude's loud laughter and displays of affection, he still showed sorrow upon her death. 

Loves his brother. He allows Saphir to address him as "brother" instead of his proper title. He was deeply sad about Saphir's death (that was probably the only time when the love of his life was standing right in front of him but he didn't even look at her).

Cares about his clan as a whole. He was willing to give up his life so that his clan can move to the lovely Earth. His dying wish was for Sailor Moon to look after his clan.
