Ah Ark, the Demon-Tranfsormer/Zoid/-Ship summmon, AKA awesome incarnate. I wonder for some time if he is meant to be connected in any way to Zodiark from Ivalice games, like Final Fantasy Tactics and XII.

Hmm, maybe indeed they aren't, but that is just strange that retranslating more profesionaly, they added Ark to Zodiac's name, resulting in Zodiark.
Final Fantasy wiki also notices the biblical Ark reference in Zodiark.
Both are also the strongest summons, are darkness elemental, and Zodiark in Final Fantasy XIV , reminds me somewhat of Ark in look.
Then again, I maybe see connection, were there are none

Well, it's possible it's connected to Ark. The Pumice to summon Ark, is won after defeating Ozma, and Ozma is theorized Eidolon, being found in an Eidolon Cave. Specifically, Ozma would be an Eidolon, that lost it's form, due to the creators of it's legend(Terrans), being dead/in slumber. Ozma, is also immune to Shadow, Ark's element, unless the player completes the Friendly Monsters Sidequest. There is of course still the Ark that is fought on Olievert, that gives us the Pumice fragment, but I that Ark is oddly way weaker than summon of the same name and form. So I have three theories:
1. The Ark on Oeilvert, is just a lesser shadow of the true Ark(that degenerated into Ozma), created by the memory banks of Oeilvert. That's also why it gives just a Piumice fragment, not the whole thing.
2. It's one of Ark the Ships prototypes, that inspired the legend of Ark, that in turn created Ark the Eidolon(as Eidolons are said to born from legends).
3. Ark was split in two, it's it's smaller fragment, containing it's memory, becoming the Ark on Oeilvert, while the part containing Ark's majority of power, became Ozma.
Another possibilty is that Ozma is somehow realated to Omega and Weapons of previous games, as Final Fantasy 9 is otherwise the only main series game since Final Fantasy 5, that didn't have a Weapon or Omega type boss. Well Final Fantasy 13 also didn't, but Final Fantasy 13-2 did.

I may be that both are connected to Terra. Hades has the Terran eye symbol on his throne.
It's possible Hades was also a god or Eidolon from Terra, like Ozma is suggested to be.
After all, Hades was a sumon in Final Fantasy VII.
Hades possibly adapted himself to Gaian mythology/legends, which caused him to not be forgotten, line Ozma was.

With Final Fantasy XIV, some fans theorize that Zodiark, is the embodiment of a dead/dying world(compare to Terra), and that's why the Ascians(Zodiark's servants), want to kill Hydaelyn(the embodiment crystal of the world the game take place on), in order for revitalize Zodiark, or have him take over the planet. This sounds quite similar to Gaia and Terra, that's why I also postulated there may be a connection between Ark and Zodiark(both versions, although especially the XIV one).

Saddly, I also don't play, but something of a "dedicated casual fan", following the storyline and fameplay videos, as the story of FF14, is very good.

Never got that far in the Final Fantasy Series, but hey, this looks really great. You've managed to capture the true essance of FF!
