Description Few aircraft evoke the notion of a "Warplane Disaster" more than the infamous Breda Ba.88 Lince. It's considered by many experts and amateurs alike to be the worst aircraft of World War 2, and as you're about to see in this presentation, there's a strong case for that assertion.

It was supposed to be a Fighter, but it couldn't out-turn a Bomber. It was supposed to be an Attacker, but it's guns and protection were too weak. It was supposed to be a Bomber, but it's payload was too tiny. And it was supposed to be a tour-de-force of late 1930s Italian aviation technology, but it was powered by knock-offs of a British engine and built with a badly outdated construction method.

Unsurprisingly, the Lince flunked the combat test. HARD.

As usual, the script for this presentation was edited for spelling and grammar by meaninter03.

(Also, note that the presentation itself actually lists the wrong episode number; this is Episode 9, not 8)

Here are my sources for Episode 8...

The same mistakes as the Ba.88 Lince are still being repeated today. The failings of the F-35 are astonishingly similar in nature;

The Breda 88 was a high speed aircraft until they put guns and bombs on it. I have read that they were used as ground decoys because of their rotten performance!

I still want ot hear your stories about the F-35 and (rather surprisingly for me) the F/A-18.

With that said, I'm I the only one that finds supremely ironic that someone called Ernesto (Honest) Breda made such a colossal blunder?

Not only that, but it was also the last aircraft developed by Breda that went into production (the only following aircraft I know of was the Ba.201 Dive Bomber, of which only 2 prototypes were built).

As for the F-18 Hornet and F-35 Lightning II, here are a couple of quick facts, mostly to demonstrate that I *am* in fact building profiles on them.

The F-18 had seemed for a while to be a satisfactory aircraft, despite it's flaws --- until I connected the dots. For example, you know how the Hornet is widely-praised for it's multi-engine redundancy? It turns out there isn't any. One engine has an oil pump, and the other has an alternator. Lose the engine with the oil pump, and you have 10 minutes to land before both engines seize --- lose the alternator, and you crash.

The F-35 can't carry Sidewinders internally, because the 'Winder can only be launched from a rail. The bay doors don't have launch rails, nor the ability to accept them, forcing the F-35 to carry Sidewinders externally --- and doing so effectively forfeits radar stealth. With no chance of surviving a hit and little speed or maneuverability, the F-35 relies very heavily on the element of surprise to survive, so carrying Sidewinders is more of a liability than an asset. As such, carrying Sidewinders on F-35s isn't operationally feasible.

So... the reason for them to choose the YF-17 over the YF-16 is bogus? Oh my, and I thought the Hornet to be better thna that!

Regarding the F-35... I'm stil trying to find something they're doing right on that one. -.-

Money trumps honesty. Or should I say knowing the Duce trumps honesty.
