|| MHOR TERRITORY - BROKENVEIL FOREST ||

Her entire body froze like ice, her paws buried beneath deep snow, her limbs frosted over with the purest fear she’d felt since the day her father and brother were mutilated by a bear. She still remembered the terror that wracked her body then. It had stopped her breathing, her heart, and her paws. This is how I die. She remembered that thought so clearly, it was almost as if she’d spoken it aloud. What other choice was there when you stared down the black eyes of death?

Run.

Yulier faced death now just as she had then, but this time it wasn’t a massive brown bear towering over her, its hot breath bathing her fur and its roar deafening her to her brother’s screams. No, this time it was a wolf with fur like snow. She’d seen them from afar, like ghosts between the trees. She’d even seen a dead one once, out on patrol with her fellow Scourger. But this was different. This one was alive and hungry.

A tremor descended her spine, and still she couldn’t move. All she could do was watch, her lungs aching for air, her paws like stone, as the wolf approached step by step. It gnashed its teeth, a vicious snarl filling her ears and taking her back to that moment with the bear.

Saliva dripped from its incisors, red with the same blood that darkened its paws and face. Flecks of red were the only standout among a sea of white--except for those eyes. Bright like two golden suns, they nearly glowed in the dim light beneath the trees. But it wasn’t the color, nor the unreal quality that frightened her, it was the cold lack of awareness, no fury or pain driving its snapping teeth. There was nothing. A void of malice and hunger--a wild beast if she’d ever seen one.

Run.

Despite her screaming instincts, she stared it down like a startled doe. It’s going to kill you. With each passing second, that thought became more and more clear. Every moment felt like eons stretching the space between them until that space was full of putrid breath and wild growls. If she didn’t move, she’d be as dead as the rabbit lying nearby. The white wolf hadn’t so much as nibbled on it.

A long pink tongue curled from its mouth, grazing over powerful canines until finally, her breath returned in a gasp, and her heart restarted. She was not going to end up a meal for this savage creature. She’d rather throw herself over Faefyre Falls than feel its teeth around her neck and claws in her fur. But out on patrol with her Mage friend, she didn’t dare risk attacking it.

Run!

Finally snapping out of her stupor, Yulier reared back, her panic sending her paws skittering over uneven terrain until she could leap around the creature and sprint at full speed. Her howl of alarm sent crows springing from the trees, and voles scrambling for their nests. It was as if the world had held its breath with her, and now it was as alive as she wanted to be.

Get it away. Get it far, far away.

That’s all she could think as her paws pounded the earth and she steered the white wolf away from her pack.
