Don’t speak (drink) of her so harshly
She is a true daughter of M(other) Tethys and rose to meet us where we were
Sat us down among the swirling of great (schools and schools and schools of) thought
Taught us the language of sharks and eels and other sea-sprite (ghosts)
And showed us how to follow the Northern Torch to that
calm
tranquil
frozen Styx of latitude
Frightening us not with the threat of return and regret
She forgave us all this way because
We tossed our compasses into the endless well and made wishes
We burned our charts and they kept us warm for the night
We wrote our prayers on the anchor
And released it to hold us on the whims of storm away from the shore
“Sea bears foam
Sleep bears dreams
Both end the same way:
CRASH!”

That's just it: I figured you would. Der. I just hoped there was no one TOO hopeless out there that they wouldn't know who Poseidon was. The Mesoamerican, Sumerian, Egyptian, Shinto, and Wiccan ones are SUPPOSED to be tough, but are also supposed (eheh... 
The "Serpent" in "Susanoo Overthrown" is obviously the Orochi, but serpents are a pretty common reference.

It's good. Really good. If you feel it needs more, then certainly do a follow up or edit it later. Sometimes it's enough to get the initial thought out. I feel the depth (no pun intended) of meaning here is just beyond my grasp, but I think I understand this fairly well.
Also, you actually explain things in your author's comments. Maybe I should do that moar. +5 for the Zelda reference. -5 for me not being able to pick it out.

For once, I really wanted this one to be *open* to interpretation, concerning the superstitions and subsequent deaths of the "sailors".
And the reference is the quote at the end, like in "This Is Just A Small Happiness I Can Give To You". That poem doesn't seem as long-ago in my mind as yours, I'll wager.
