Description

Hermes Trismegistus, a pseudo-historical figure who is purportedly an incarnation of both the Greek God, Hermes and the Egyptian God, Thoth (both are gods of written language and wisdom). He wrote secret knowledge of the World on the Emerald Tablet, which was considered as the foundation of alchemy. The word Alchemy was created from the Greek word chēmeia, which derived from chein, meaning “to pour.” It then passed to Arabic, which added its definite article al- (“the”) to the Greek root.

According to Gnosticism, Sophia is a feminine figure, analogous to the human soul but simultaneously the feminine aspects of God. She was fallen from grace, in so doing create the material world. The Ancient Greek word Sophia means 'wisdom, skill, intelligent'.

In this artwork, Sofia is the personification of divine wisdom and the material world. The goddess is holding an emerald tablet, written on by Hermes as his knowledge preserver.

We human beings and the Universe are interconnected. The power of transformation is not all about turning dust into gold or chasing materialistic values. It is about using knowledge combined with techniques to bring thoughts, ideas, intangible value into existence. Vice versa, we are studying the language of nature to understand and alter our inner selves for the better. That is the true meaning of 'alchemy'. Just like how Hermes Trismegistus turns a pile of rock into a meaningful and powerful script, we unite ourselves with the World not only to discover but also recreate the Universe, as we and the Universe are one.

Thus, we never stop questioning, never stop understanding, never stop.
