I like that she takes the knife off of her gun when she puts on the helmet. Helmets are for RANGED combat!

One of the reasons that stuck with me for a sister wearing a beret was the doctor who catholic church were the clerics and bishops were all bad ass military men. Combining the gung ho of the marines with the religion aspect. Plus there was the fact that I kind of wanted to see a sister in a beret.
The celestians in the order act as sort of heavy troopers fighting in the thickest of battles, so they started wearing heavier armor compared to the normal sisters of battle.

Personally, I think the beret is refreshing. There's an abundance of more traditional looking Sister of Battle art, and I think it's fun to see little differences between orders.Β

I'm surprised that bayonets aren't standard for Bolters given how often you end up in melee in the 40k-verse

Arianod In reply to Michaelmtv [2015-07-09 08:11:04 +0000 UTC]
But they are! It's the player's choice to include them on the model or not, but you'll see plenty of bolters with bayonets in the official art.

Because most characters carrying around bolters can use them as clubs

I was gonna say that. They're not very long, and they weigh so much sticking a knife on it is about as effective as tying streamers to them.

Well, knives that Space Marines use in 40k are the equivalent of shortswords with edges that are supposedly sharpened to be smaller than most molecules so they can cut basically anything. According to the lore, anyway. Of course, that's not always the case

I wouldn't be surprised, but I haven't seen fluff saying they use mono-bladed bayonets in the marines. Β That tech's not cheap, or worth the ordination, even for marines, esp. when pistol whip will break every bone in a mans body. Β
I mean, I'm sure that even then that the blades have super advanced metalurgy that makes better equipment than we ever could, but a bolter weighs more than a greatmaul, and the soldier wields it like its a wifflebat, so anything esle is practically a step back. Β I think unless you're trying to get through something, a blade on the bolter is akin to trying to chisel someone to death; sure it's deadlier, but it's a heck of a lot more unwieldy, and dead's dead!

Sons of Dorn
Unless scouts get better equipment than the actual Marines, I think they do have it as standard equipment, at least for some Chapters...

Just looked it up, according to deathwatch all marines combat knifes, which they use for their bayonets, have a mono edge. Although an astartes bolter weights about 18 pounds, it is probably better to stick the knife on there for tearing though armor better.Β
Or in the sisters case it is their sarassia, which has been described as turning a bolter into an ax.

Thanks for the answers. Β I'm sure a few people wouldn't take DW as proof of that, but it's good enough for me. Β An axe is more like it in my opinion. Β I'm sure the pointy end still gets lots of action, but the shape of the weapon doesn't work as a spear.
But an astartes bolter weighing 18 pounds?!? Β No, I don't buy that; even if it's printed somewhere. Β The things gotta weigh AT LEAST 50 pounds, sans magasine or shells.Β

Thinking on it, it may be 18 kg not pounds. It is just listed under WT and since my american brain is on the imperial measurements it assumed that. So an astartes bolter looks to be about 40 pounds. Still I think their combat knife may be more effective to pierce some of the armor plates of enemies.
A regular bolter is listed at 7kg for those used by humans which puts it at 15 pounds.

Does DH use Metric? Β I don't know where the writers are from, but I know the UK (I'm Canadian; I swing both ways) prefers to use imperial for weight, and milage. Β But they use Miles and litres, so that makes them a terrible country to drive a car it.
I'm sure I agree that the knife has better penetration though. Β In a FW article in Siege of Vraks II it mentions (a Death Guard) SM being able to pierce adamantium with even a regular knife. Β For anything below ceramite I think the knife is better.

Yea they use metric. Or at least that is what all the measurements do in the 40k books tend to do.
