The Hood

A secret organization that has existed for nearly six centuries, one that specializes in clandestine acts. In its prime, it was a name to be feared, a name to be reckoned with, basing its operations from the Undercity of Neros Palaram’s capital.

It was created during a time of crisis in Neros, piracy was rampant and anarchy ravaged the land. These unquellable conditions drove the Merchant Lords to create a secret army, mercenaries that existed outside the Hegemony’s command structure, whose sole purpose seek and destroy criminals. Brutally, one might add.

At the head of the Hood was a masked man known to his peers as Sebastian Kyris, a charismatic individual whose witty wordplay was only matched by his swordsmanship. He was worshipped by his men and the people of Neros; his name became a byword for hero and savior. According to the legends surrounding the Hood, he was said to be immortal; as according to records he lived for over five hundred years. In reality, the real Sebastian had died years ago and his heir, abandoning their name and their life, took on the role as Sebastian Kyris, leader of the Hood. This has become the secret tradition for the leader of the Hood, as none ever have seen the true Sebastian’s face, to all the more elaborate on the Hood’s magnificence.

The Merchant Lords got more than they bargained for. The Hood was all too effective, resulting in the pirates and brigands to be either absorbed by the Hood or eliminated outright. The Lords of Neros then tried to take control of their creation, a bad move on their part, since the Hood existed to serve for the people, not for the government. The organization seemingly disbanded, but underwent a rebirth right under the Lords’ noses, in their own city. This was to keep a watchful eye of the Lords and their actions, which became more and more debauched. Neros had become no better than the pirates they wished destroyed.

The 3rd Sebastian had become fed up with Merchant Lords. Openly defying them, he gathered together a pirate fleet, plundering every Neros ship belonging to a crooked guild. The Neros almost seemed ready for them, as in reply they sent a vast armada of ships-of-the-line, literal fortresses on the waves. Supposed hideouts of the Hood suddenly were wiped clean and the numbers of the pirate gang began to diminish. Some even began to lose faith in Sebastian Kyris.

To counter-act this threat, Sebastian hatched a devilish plot: Turn the guns of the fortress ships on themselves; create so much anarchy in the Neros fleet that they will have a hard time determining friend from foe. Those that were left said it was madness, they were too few now to pull off something like that, it would take a miracle. But Sebastian was brimming with confidence, so much so that it also fell upon the remainder of the Hood. As one final daring act of defiance against a corrupt regime, the Hood infiltrated like Neros fleet and watched it tear itself apart. To turn the tides even more, the Hood made off with Grand Sultan Nadar’s personal flagship, Katwari Queen, to make more of a point than a military asset. The Hood was not meant to be trifled with. The Neros backed down and began acting like the government it should be; by the people, for the people.

Many adventures and schemes followed suit, more miraculous and unbelievable than the next. Stories spread far and wide, deeds becoming legendary among the common folk. Its been said that they broke into the Golden Vaults of the Lhamia, taking their incredible wealth and showering it among the peasants wallowing in the streets. It is also said that were behind the assassination of Emperor Leto Archimedes III, a death that shattered the imperial plan of invading Neros. It seemed like the Hood was indomitable and incorruptible. However, this ended with the seventh reincarnation of Sebastian Kyris.

The 7th Sebastian discovered a dark secret, something so vile and despicable that he held the Hood in such contempt afterwards. His mentor had died before his training was to be complete, failing to mention a ritual that must be undertaken before becoming Sebastian Kyris. A demon queen of luck and chance had struck a bargain with the third Sebastian, giving him the ability to change his fortune at will. Not only that, but he will gain the physical appearance, the voice and skills of the original Sebastian Kyris. In return he must sacrifice a family member to her. Refusing to let his only brother be given up as an offering to this foul beast, he broke the contract and abandoned the Hood.

The Hood, now leaderless, had the power and respect of a king with the mindset of a slave. The new followers that had flocked the organization were surly and unruly, caring more for themselves and personal gain than they were for the welfare of the people. Soon it collapsed on itself, self-imposed leaders fought for position, jealous mercenary gangs taking advantage of their disorientation. The Hood was no more. To the present day, the Hood has become more of a mere legend than a existing force in the world. However there are rumoured to be a few members still left taking refuge where they can, in the hopes of rekindling their once powerful guild.
