The Prologue is at an end. Ethelion could not prevent himself and his party from being frozen in stone, but he can enhance the spell so that is affects not only the Shadow, but all of his kin.

This will be explained later on, but I think I'll be nice and explain it to you guys.

In the world of the Vale, there are two types of Magic: Earth Magic, and Star Magic. Earth Magic consists of the natural magics of the world. This includes creatures like Dryads, Nymphs, and other benevolent magical creatures. Earth Magic is commonly utilised by mages and spellcasters.
Star Magic comes from the Dragons. They expended parts of their own life energy to create other magical forces in the world. They are the inventors of Necromancy, Goblins, Trolls, Ents as well as many other less-than tasteful creatures. Most of them aren't inherently evil; just the ones that follow Dar'Akunai, the Great Black Dragon.

The Shadow, as a creature of Star Magic, wanted to seal away all Earth Magic as well as the three heroes. Brina and Baltham are normal creatures, but Ethelion is actually a creature of Star Magic. Ethelion couldn't prevent the freezing of all Earth Magic, but he could use his own power as a conduit to seal all Star Magic directly related to the Shadow away with him, as it was the only way to halt the Shadow's plan.
