Wouldn't a rat kobold be just a tiny ratling/skaven?

That sweet sweet Nezumi ninja. There should be more rat-people in fantasy.Β

I always wondered why people were making mammal kobolds when I've only seen reptilian ones. I still don't really get it...

When DnD arrived to Japan, a translation errorΒ  happened. Now they think Kobolds are dog-like creatures and that's what spreads confusion fucking weebs are cancer.
Kobolds are draconids. There's a reason you always find them serving dragons.

while in the D&D context I do agree they are draconoids, kobolds as a concept on their own don't really have a set apereance. hell, the original german myth where they come from talks about them being shapeshifters and usually taking the form of small children like creatures. and, if you look at kobolds in the second edition of D&D, they are straight up goblins. Diferent cultures will have diferent versions of the same monsters, like how dragons are diferent on the west and the east, that have nothing in common other than being reptilian looking. is just that this is far more recent.

I think of Kobold as a blanket term for a lesser Thrope monster, like they are a sub-species of all the Were-Beast species or at least that's how I am reading it. IMHO it adds a very small simple but significant side/twist to it all. Opens it all up for more content creation.
