Tails' family has ancestry dating back to the Mahoubi (magic tail; also name pending) clan, who tended to have multiple tails, even up to nine. These magical traits rarely manifest, and usually in non-magical ways.

Miles was born female with two tails, which was the source of much ridicule. She also didn't fully feel like she was a girl. One day when she was young, she ran to her parents in shock: she was now 'he'. The young Miles had developed Mahoubi transformation abilities. Miles didn't have conscious control of this ability: when she felt female, she was female; when he felt male, he was male. As they were still young, there weren't many differences between their forms, but of course as they grew more would manifest.

When Miles was 8, they heard about the supersonic blue hedgehog who saved South Island. All the kids in the village on Westside Island talked about the blue hero, when they weren't bullying Miles that is for their twin tails. The other kids didn't notice their changing form, but the adults did, and also looked at Miles with disdain, which just made the kids think they had permission to be mean to poor Miles. Until they met Sonic face to face and helped him save Westside Island as well. Then everyone changed their tune. Loving and accepting of Miles, now Tails, their parents recognized that Sonic could give their child what they failed: understanding. When Miles came, not asking, but telling them they'd be going with Sonic on his adventures, they gave them their blessing. So Tails joined Sonic and the pink hedgehog who just showed up on a journey to a mysterious floating island. It's worth noting that Tails' minor magical powers also are what allow him to rotate his tails like a helicopter rotor and spin dash despite foxes not having a curled defense.
