.... Me. Doing digital art-ish things. Guys, get the TV crews. A miracle has happened.

No really, I actually need some practice, digital art is one of my big weaknesses. I bought a graphic tablet in summer and barely used it, only for sketches.
So I finally found the time and motivation to start something more serious (right before my pre-finals, yay! 
I thought that I could start with it the same that brought me into traditional art - horse portraits. I know, no extra-points for creativity, but I am already a bit proud that I actually did something.
As I need to improve, I'd love to get a critique of this piece or maybe some general help for Digital Art. That's why I decided to submit it anyway, even if it isn't one of my greatest works... But I guess that everyone starts their way somewhere. 
Or do you know some nice tutorials? Please, share your knowledge with me!
And maybe you could punch me from time to time and ask me if I touched the evil Photoshop thing in the last few days? That'd be helpful, too.

Hehe, die ersten Sachen, die ich gemacht hab als ich Photoshop neu hatte waren bei mir auch schrecklich...
Aber mit Graphic Tablet ist das echt deutlich einfacher und macht echt Spaß.

Nein, so wirklich mein erstes digitales Bild ist das (leider) nicht...
Vor ein paar Jahren hatte ich schon mal ein bisschen mit Photoshop herumprobiert, aber so wirklich hat das nicht geklappt.
So richtig brilliant finde ich das Ding hier jetzt auch nicht, bin etwas überrascht, dass das hier so gut ankommt. Naja, liegt wohl weniger an meinen Zeichenfähigkeiten als daran, dass es halt ein Pferd ist.

Naja, ist wie mit jedem Medium, man muss einfach ein bisschen rumprobieren und es wird besser. Basically, wenn du gut zeichnen kannst, was du tust, bzw gut in traditionellen Medien arbeiten kannst, wirst du auch sehr schnell den Einstieg in Photoshop finden. Hast du dich denn nochmal an ein neues Bild gesetzt?
Was Turorials angeht, gibt viel auf Englisch, was aber mehr Richtung Entertainment Design geht, zum beispiel die Youtubekanäle: idrawgirls und fzdschool. Mein Mitbewohner und ich machen im Moment aber auch eine Art Tutorial-Kanal auf,der sich mit Photoshop, after-effects und 3DProgrammen beschäftigt, ich schreib dir mal wenns soweit ist (sind noch in den Dreharbeiten zu den ersten Folgen, müssen wegen Weihnachten vorproduzieren)^^

Oh wow, this is lovely! 
I love how detailed the head is, especially the eye and muzzle. What I find really cool is that you included even the subtler details, like the whiskers and eyelashes (since these are often overlooked). If there is something that could be improved upon, it's the ears, as they look too triangular.
In terms of technique, I have yet to try digital art myself, so critique-wise I can't really go further.

Okay, das war vielleicht etwas doof ausgedrückt - das Programm an sich hab ich seit 3 Jahren - nur wirklich mit viel Motivation benutzt hab ich es nie.
Um das zu ändern, hab ich mir dann im Sommer mal ein Graphic Tablet zugelegt, seitdem hab ich ab und an mal ein paar Skizzen gemacht (gerade Menschen bekomme ich digital irgendwie einfacher hin, hab ich das Gefühl...). Also - komplett neu bin ich mit dem Programm nicht. Meine ersten Versuche, gerade mit Mouse, sahen aber auch absolut grottig aus.
Aber trotzdem danke! Ich war auch ganz erstaunt, dass das auf einmal so gut ging. ^-^

I think you did a great job on the face, the neck seems to lack some details though. I think its just the strokes you used. They are very thick and seem to take over rather then blend in. I would suggest making it more transparent and then building it up more.
I love having a tablet but I really use it like I use the paper... I stray away from so many of the cool effects that you can use. I dunno, I feel like I'm cheating myself of skills I should learn but thats my personal preference. If you google things like fur tutorials, you can find some really great ones using the effects, I'll try to find some of the ones I used before and post them for you

Yes, the fact that it looks so sketchy due to the brush strokes bothers me, too. I think I'll work with softer brushes the next time. I need to find a technique that I like, in general I am not a huge fan of these super-softly drawn and sometimes very realistic pieces, I usually prefer more stylized pieces.
But I'll see, maybe I am going to be the next big digital hyperrealism artist - who knows.
I actually like to experiment with the program, but there are so incredible many features, I think it is almost impossible to learn how to use all of them. But I think it would be a lot easier when you're able to use the program with all the great things that you can do with it, rather than treating it like a traditional medium. But that's what I do, too - I think that with every new medium you try to apply the techniques you already know on the new thing and with the time you learn all the additional things, too.

You might like to use the smudge finger tool, it makes it look more like real paint and it blends well as well as the softer brushes. Its very true that I treat it too much like traditional work, but I enjoy it so I guess thats ok. sometimes too many effects just looks to computerized for me to show as my work but again just an opinion. I hope you can find a style you like with it because I find that digital art really helps, just in general. Practice and you have a range of so many different styles and techniques to use (and you dont have to buy things to get the look of another media type)
