The officer raised a brow at their lead interrogator. Their methods were unorthodox, but who was he to argue with results?

"I'm just surprised is all." He watched the elf ravenously stuff another slice of pie into her mouth. "That knife-ear personally spit in my face when we collected her, and now she's our top informant. She's practically... domesticated."

"They hate us, because they fear us. Naturally, they fear what they don't understand." The interrogator smiled. "They can't conceive of a society beyond scarcity. Under our care, they'll never want again. They won't have to scavenge, they won't have to hunt, and they'll certainly never have to barter with stupid forest spirits again."

He seemed particularly annoyed at the last oddly specific thing he listed.

"I see... so you made her understand."

"The empire simply has everyone's best interests in mind."

"Mph... to gain access to the secret entrance," The elf spoke with a full mouth. "You must first find a fey guide."

"Are you writing this down?" The interrogator hissed at one of his subordinates. "It's always with these forest spirits, I swear..."

"So... what do you intend to do with her after this is all over?"

The interrogator looked at the officer with surprise.

"Why, integrate her, of course." He said as if the answer was obvious. "That's what the empire does."
