Description The origins of the Lily, or Lilium, or Lilium Longiflorum dates back to Greek mythology. In fact, this beautiful flower was born from the milk of the greek and roman goddess Juno or Hera ( Ἥρα, Hḕrā, Giunone), some drops of which, fell to the ground while she was nursing Hercules, and the remaining milk that fell, went up in the sky, to to give rise to the milky way. The name, instead, it is said to derive from the Celtic "li" that meant "white" or from the Greek word "leírion" that means purity, in turn deriving, based on etymological sources, from an ancient Egyptian word which meant "flower".  In addition to being used in medicine, this flower, in particular the white Lily or Lilium Candidum, is highly associated with the Virgin Mary for it's colour, that symbolize purity and chastity, but also with the Archangel Gabriel, often represented in paintings carrying a lily in his hand, for example in the painting "L'Annunciazione" of Leonardo Da Vinci, and many more.
