Handsome Lesser Spotted Woodpecker you've got there, young Atkins - and very crisply captured, I must say! Careful if you've still got your nestbox on the apple tree though, they've been known to attack the chicks & steal the eggs of other species...

Yes, think you're right, looking at the markings again - it was the size that made me think it was the Lesser. Shame in a way, the Lesser is quite a special rare sight nowadays. Good to hear your nestboxes are thriving!

The lesser is far harder to find almost the size of a sportswriter and I think not so good looking..this fella as been coming 3 times a day for months now,itβs great, and yes I seem to have loads of different birds in garden,love it.
