Dance in the Wind

Done for *Onatra 's Collaboration . The idea is to create an image inspired by the band ONATRA's song "Dance With The Wind". You can listen to it here If you like Nightwish, Within Temptation, Sonata Arctica, etc., you'll probably like ONATRA too!

The song has no words, but the idea behind it is this:
Every day a lonely young girl visits a special place in the middle of the field. She likes to talk with her brother Wind, being alone. She asks him to take her soul far away, where she can meet her beloved, who died in the war. Every night in her dreams she sees his last breath. She asks her brother Wind to dance with her the dance of her last breath, after which she will be able to embrace her beloved.

When *Onatra invited me to join the collaboration, there were only two days left until the deadline before it was extended (until August 14th, if anyone wants to make a quick entry) so I drew the girl and swirls of "wind" with charcoal in about 30 minutes, no references. I added several textures and brushes in GIMP and ended up with what you see here. It was an interesting experiment because I usually add the textures and stuff to graphite drawings, and I really like how it ended up using the charcoal--it looks a bit more ethereal.

So the concept is there's the girl in a somewhat dance-like pose with a long dress (like a wedding dress, since she's going to be with her beloved). The swirls around her symbolize her brother Wind, who is taking her to Heaven (hence the outer-space-y background). The big star over her hand symbolizes the spirit of her beloved who died. My own little addition to the story is that the girl and her beloved become constellations in the sky, and the outline of her can be drawn with the larger stars placed around her outline.
