You're completely right, despite its simplicity this photo is supposed to depict a serene but deep sadness.
Seeing the beautiful, soft light of life dawning in the distance, but being lost in the void and finding the sharp restraints of the past between you and that light in the distance.

I couldn't say it better. Mistakes and remorses from the past are usually incredibly overwhelming, paralysing, that even if you seek for the escape of your own disapointment, it follows you. And you can't stop it, you're in the void, you've got nothing to defend.
