Description Chapter 9
Appearances

She couldn't quite understand why, but seeing Vlad Dalca in the daylight unnerved her.

He was in white, white T-shirt, white jeans, white golf shoes, just white, except his large black sunglasses. Mihai was dressed in the same way. Lydia thought he might act as Vlad's caddy, but Mihai gladly acted as her caddy instead, just as Vlad had suggested. Lydia didn't complain. She wanted to find a moment alone with him anyway.

Mihai drove the golf cart that just carried his father, Charles, and Lydia. Claire had her own nameless caddy, and her own golf cart, and her caddy followed Mihai's lead on the golf course.

Vlad was so quiet and robotic as he struck his golf balls that Lydia wondered if he even liked the game, even though he was damn good at it. She gave Mihai a mild look, her eyes a bit suspicious but not cruel. Mihai pulled his own large sunglasses down at winked at her. "He does not like golf," he whispered, "but he likes you."

Lydia's eyebrow quirked.

Charles made a nervous smile as he took his turn, and he accidentally made a divot. Claire snorted, muttering something about knowing where Lydia got her skills from. Mihai walked near her with a golf club on his shoulder, said, "Oh did you say something?" and turned around, almost hitting Claire in her face. Claire screamed, startling the other players, except Vlad, who didn't really pay attention.

Mihai leaned in towards Claire and gently stroked her cheek with his smooth fingers. "I'm so sorry, Pretty Girl. Didn't mean to strike you." He sounded sweeter than a powdered doughnut. Lydia just knew he was lying.

Claire smiled like a small school girl who had a crush on a teacher.

Lydia asked Mihai to find a certain club of hers, and he cheerfully obeyed. Claire gave Lydia a rather evil look, and Lydia discreetly gave her the infamous finger. Mihai winked at Lydia; she wasn't exactly sure why.

Near the end of the game, Lydia asked Mihai if she could talk to him privately. He nodded. They both told the group that they needed to use the restroom. For the sake of appearances, they both spent some time in the gender separated areas for a few minutes. Lydia was the first to emerge. She waited behind the building, and Mihai came to her quickly.

"What's wrong?" he asked very gently, giving her that welcoming smile of his.

Lydia folded her arms. "Why are you fucking around with my Prudence and my Bertha?"

His smile disappeared as if there was a lever controlling it. Mihai's brow furrowed, and his shoulders slumped only slightly. "I only fucked Prudence. Bertha is too thin for me."

She had to mentally yell at herself to keep from punching him in the face. "How long will it take for you to get bored? I don't think they deserve to be played with!"

Mihai put his hand to his heart, and his face wilted into a very hurt expression. "I am not playing with them. I made no promises to the girls that I won't keep. I promised Bertha that if she needed a friend, I'd be her friend. That's easy to do. I promised Prudence that I would give her a career as a singer. I will do this no matter the difficulty. She sang to me in private. She is not a professional, but her voice is pretty and she can learn more."

Lydia stomped her foot. "Why are you fucking her?!"

"She's pretty, and she likes sex." He shook his head in disbelief. "Shouldn't you be happy with me? Shouldn't you think I am wonderful for being so kind and generous with your friends?"

"I think you're being a stupid shit!"

His hands dangled at his sides. His mouth opened a little, and it quivered a bit. Mihai formed his hands into fists, and then he shut his mouth. His gray eyes narrowed. "I will prove to you that I am worthy of your approval, Lydia."

"Why the hell would you care about that?"

He didn't address that question. He only said, "I will protect those girls, and you will see that I am a good person!"

Mihai stomped away from her. Lydia didn't think he was lying, but she couldn't understand his intentions. He was starting to be more confusing that his father. Damn it.

Sighing and scratching her head, Lydia went back to the group, where Mihai was apparently trying not to let anyone know he had been upset. He was so cheerful Lydia was almost disgusted.

Vlad won, as he had predicted. Lydia came in a close second. Claire would have been in first place, but she had been caught moving her ball when she should not have been doing so. Vlad whispered something to Mihai, and Mihai playfully called her a naughty girl to lighten his scolding.

The first one to get in a golf cart at the end of the game was Lydia. She was followed by Vlad, who sat beside her. He asked her, "Ai spus ceva crud la fiul meu?" Did you say something cruel to my son?

Charles was approaching, Mihai chatting with him. Lydia hissed to him, "Întreabă-mă mai târziu." Ask me later.

Vlad winked at her.
***

Her dreams held images of violent insanity.

Faceless men impaled on stakes, rotting in the sun, they screamed at her.

The earth swallowed her, and she saw only orange light. Then grinning skulls of pale gold leered at her.

Darkness came, along with hellish screams, and weeping, of children.

Light again, dim firelight, on floating candles, there was Prudence, chained to a stone wall, enduring violent rape by an abomination of a creature, heavy and bloody mechanical thing with too many hands and long thin claws.

Why wasn't Prudence screaming? Her face was dead. Was she dead?

There was so much blood.

Lydia screamed and tried to run to the monster.

She couldn't move.

There was darkness again.

Lydia's eyes opened with such force that her eyelids hurt. Her stomach seemed to be weakening. It felt like a thin glass window being shot. In the darkness of her room, she got up, felt around for her trashcan, and vomited into it.

***

Lydia didn't really feel like explaining to her father why had to throw out a bag of vomit, so she did so discreetly. For the entire day she felt peculiar, lacking any feeling of excitement, uncertain. Her face exhibited a blankness. She was always lost in her own mind. At school, when a teacher asked her something, Lydia simply said, "I dunno." She didn't even look at the teacher. When her father tried to talk to her in the afternoon, Lydia merely nodded and made a soft hum of a sound. Charles asked her what the problem was, but she just didn't answer. He kissed her cheek and gave her glass of chocolate milk. Lydia drank the milk, then let Charles hug her. She still didn't say much of anything, and certainly did not look at his face.

In the evening Lydia had a headache. She took some pills and then played some soft music. She really liked this iPod of hers. She was just about to sleep in her bed, cozy and pleased with her iPod, when suddenly a terrible, loud, high pitched Vocaloid-like scream came from the speakers. Lydia screamed and tore the speakers from her ears. The sound didn't stop. It kept on and on. Lydia pushed her palms to her ears and screamed too. Her headache was only getting worse, pounding into her skin like a drum being played by an amateur. It nearly burned her. She thought her head might explode. Lydia screamed, "No no no no NO NO NO NO!!!!"

The world became white, and the sound stopped, leaving only a high ringing in her ears. She couldn't see her limbs as she thrashed about, couldn't feel her bed. She was falling. She just knew she was falling.

"LYDIA!!!!"

She woke up.

The world was blurry at first, but it sharpened, and it was daytime, and gray. Her father was standing over her, looking a bit older due to his worry. Delia was there too. She wasn't wearing any lipstick, and she was worrying that mouth of her with her teeth. A woman she didn't know was there. She looked like a nurse.

Lydia groaned. Her head was still killing her. She tried to get up, but Charles restrained her. "Pumpkin, you're in a hospital. You've been asleep for almost twenty four hours."

"What?" Lydia blinked several times. She noticed IV tubes attached to her arm. "Why the hell are there tubes?"

"You couldn't eat," Delia said. "You were sleeping."

Lydia stared at the nurse. "Why was I sleeping like that?"

With a motherly look on her face, the nurse answered, "We really don't know. We did everything short of electrocuting you to try to get you up."

Charles brushed away some of Lydia's hair. "You fidgeted a lot. Sometimes you whined."

Lydia's eyes widened. "Is there a catheter in me?"

Smiling, Charles said, "Yes."

"Why?" she moaned.

"Well you couldn't get up to pee yourself, right?" Charles replied, smiling.

Lydia Deetz, war hero, killed hundreds, survived extreme torture, endured really annoying and emotionally draining chats with a therapist, she was in a hospital with IV tubes and a catheter. She knew there was no real reason to be embarrassed, but she felt embarrassed. Fuck it.

"Get me home now," she growled. Her father obeyed, hugging her.

Mihai and Vlad just had to visit her that evening. They just had to. Mihai claimed this statement as fact. Lydia privately thought that Mihai's pretty ankle length burgundy colored gown was strangely matronly. It looked to be inspired by 1870s Western fashions, with white lace draped all around the skirt and bodice like icing drapes on an old fashioned wedding cake. Vlad had on a casual black suit, but still looked rich and powerful. Lydia was too tired to leave the couch in the living room, so her stepmother had dressed her earlier in a soft pair of jeans and a baggy gray shirt. She wasn't even wearing house slippers.

Lydia felt so inadequate. She was a weak little creature sitting with two strong men who had grand auras. They were like kings.

She refused to look the men in their eyes.

Mihai patted her head so many times. The two men brought her bouquets of flowers and boxes of chocolates. Mihai tried to entice her into eating some, but Lydia shrugged and looked away from them.

Charles was in a nearby chair, and he frowned. "Lydia, eat some chocolate."

Vlad reached out and placed his palm on Lydia's cheek. "You seem depressed. Did something happen to you?"

She had no idea why she felt so hollow. She couldn't figure out what she should say to him. Lydia just turned her head away.

"Lydia," Mihai said to her, "you need to be given pretty things. Let me buy nice things for you."

Lydia thought she should feel angry, and she should chastise Mihai. She wasn't angry, and she couldn't chastise Mihai. She didn't want to really do anything.

Vlad gripped her chin and said, "Lydia, please look at my eyes. Look at someone's eyes." She would not do that. He looked at Charles. "Take her to a psychiatrist. I beg you."

"I'll do that tomorrow if she doesn't perk up," Charles said with a defeated tone. He shook his head and then ran a hand through his blonde hair.

Mihai kissed her hand. His eyes seemed to be shiner than normal. He was looking at her with an expression so tender it was a wonder his face didn't melt. "Ce e în neregulă? Ce e în neregulă? Ce pot face?" What's wrong? What's wrong? What can I do? He whispered that to her a few times.

Lydia's nearly dead eyes moved down to look at her lap.

For a few seconds, Vlad's lips pressed together tightly. Then he looked at Charles again. "My heart is aching, Mr. Deetz. I pity this dear woman. Has she told anyone of any problems in her life? Has she been upset lately?"

Mihai's face loosened, jaw dropped a little, eyes appearing to grow larger. Then he tightened his face again, jaw setting into a clenched position, eyes turning regretful. "Iartă-mă, te rog. Nu am vrut să te supăr," he murmured sadly. Forgive me, please. I didn't mean to upset you. He put his lips to her forehead.

A child, a little boy … Lydia's mind accepted the image in her mind. It was a little boy. She had kissed his forehead. He was so sad at the time. Why not kiss him?

Lydia's chest seemed to feel open in a liberating way. She gasped and turned to Mihai, staring at him as if he had turned purple and she wanted to know why. Lydia placed her palms onto Mihai's cheeks. The dear man put his hands on hers, and smiled. A tear slid down from his eye. Tears came to Lydia's eyes too. She kissed his forehead, and then she slumped into his embrace.

"Lydia?!" Charles said as he ran over to her. He leaned over the two people.

Vlad looked at Mihai, his eyes sober but holding a spark of hope. "She will still need to see a psychiatrist."

Lydia moved out of Mihai's arms and gave Vlad an almost hateful look. "I'm not going to another doctor. I'm fine."

Gently patting her shoulder, Vlad said with a low tone, "You are not well, Lydia."

"I'm never well. Fuck off!" She tore away from Mihai and stood up. "Something happened. I don't know what it is, but it happened. I'll find out what it is."

Charles hugged her. "You really need to see someone about this."

Lydia pushed herself away from him. "I'm sorry, but this is really special, okay? Really, really special, like … like when we first moved into this house." She gave him a meaningful look, her lips thinning out.

"Lydia? That kind of special?" Charles rubbed his temple with the heel of his hand. "Then talk to someone special. Promise me?"

Nodding, she said, "Definitely." She folded her hands behind her, and tried not to look at Mihai. She had no idea why she had kissed the man on his forehead, especially since she didn't think she had to right to kiss a man she had called a stupid shit.

Delia finally came into the room, her hair a mess. She had been taking a nap; the poor dear exhausted herself worrying over Lydia. "Oh hi there guys! I didn't expect to see …" She looked at a standing Lydia. "Oh my … Lydia!" Delia ran to her stepdaughter and hugged her. "Are you okay?"

"Fine, fine. I'm too tough for this shit," Lydia said with a tired voice.

"Don't curse for no reason," scolded Charles. He made a deep sigh. "You need some attention."

Lydia leaned into Delia and closed her eyes. She was still tired, not exhausted, just a little tired.
