Viking Mud Skirmish 2019
Stage 1- 1/2: Steep Downhill Run
It has become quite silent around the former Mudskirmish champion. Despite his involvement in the academy he was more focused to progress in his skills than to make any public appearance in events and other things. The last time he took part in anything like that was the big culprit hunt in a Veternaetr some time ago. Gunr, his trusty steed, was just the same. He was left to get more acquainted with the local forest-dwelling herd that lived with some guildmembers near the academy grounds. But today was different. It was time...
Vjarven shifted around in Gunr's saddle. Despite having already mastered the course with his loyal mount he was kind of nervous. Not because he felt the pressure to defend his title as a champion though. It was something else. Something he couldn't really fully grasp right now.
He was pulled out of his thoughts though when he heard Farah approach with her companion. Aenor volunteered to guide Farah through the course. Aenor and Haegindi, as the warden's assistants, were both well versed in maneuvering courses like that. The vast outdoors often presented far bigger risks than such a somewhat regulated obstacle-course.
Farah and Syn were not as experienced but Farah felt the need to join. She had always practiced her volur-studies in a more safe and book-smart kinda way but after switching to Vol's course and getting to know him and Aenor better she got more and more interested in the "outdoor" kind of way to practice seidr. And thus the desire to join the Mudskirmish rose. She wanted to connect more to her "wild" and natural side.
Vjarven nodded gratefully into Aenor's direction. He knew of the difficulty this course had. At least this time the weather seemed to be pleasant.
He took another deep breath when all of a sudden something hit his knee hard. With a slight growl he spun around only to see Vol passing by on Kerki's back, close enough to bump into him while doing so. Gunr snorted in disbelief. How did this mare dare to not give him the proper space and respect he, as a champion of this skirmish, deserved.
His human companion though seemed more concerned about the warden's behavior. Vol donned the traditional outfit of the guildmembers, something he rarely did. Only few knew about how he considered himself not a true part, even unworthy, of the guild. Seeing him appear in a public event like that wasn't just for show.
Vjarven must've stared at him for too long, which caught Vol's attention. Glancing back over his shoulder half of his face was hidden but his features revealed a rather nasty grin.
He did not speak a single word but Vjarven knew that this was meant as a challenge. And by the gods, he would accept it.
Feeling his rider tense on top of him Gunr reacted accordingly. Stepping in his spot he was more than eager to go, to proof that he was still the one who mastered this course the last time.
Kerkilli on the other hand appeared nearly unfazed. Her head was low, her muscles soft. Her ear twitched and turned into Gunr's direction from time to time but that was all that youngster got from her. Despite him not knowing who she was she knew very well with whom she was dealing... and she did not care one bit.
And with the signal everything changed.....
The chill mare suddenly burst forward with a jump, nearly leaping down the hill. Her hooves hit the ground hard, digging deep into the mud. She turned her body just right to switch between steps and slides, all while her human companion shifted his weight perfectly to her moves. One could easily see that those two had been a unity since ages, both battle-worn and with a bond forged by ice and fire. Gunr and Vjarven where not to be underestimated though. Their experience from the last skirmish showed despite slight struggling to keep steady on their legs thanks to the uneven ground. Falling would be a disaster to them both, not because they feared the mud and the wounds but now they had something to lose and a worthy opponent to impress!
Vol was focused on letting Kerki do her thing and not disturb her. Feeling her body move and following her was not too difficult though thanks to all the different terrains they had crossed together. Breathing deeply he prepared for the next obstacle when he heard a familiar neigh that was neither Kerki's nor Gunr's or one of the other horses. He refrained from spinning around to not risk bringing Kerki off balance but at the slightest chance to look around safely he did... and what he saw was definitely not to his liking.
Just beside Gunr and Vjarven another contestant had sneaked his way onto the course and Vol was more than displeased to see the stallion here.
Atgeirr had followed them the whole day. He understood what was about to happen, what they were doing. He just did not understand why Vol picked Kerkilli over him.
They were a duo since quite some time now with Vol spending so much time with him. The stallion simply did not get why he was not allowed to master this course with his human companion.
And so, to proof himself, he decided to join on his own. He would show him that he was ready!
Or so he thought.......
