It all started with a, maybe somewhat boldly stated, challenge at the Imperial's Golden Hunt

There was no hint if it was meant seriously or just for fun but by the end of the event Vidar and Horatio found themselves in a somewhat different kind of deal, at least compared to the deals Horatio was acquainted with. An endurance trip through Northern Africa, along the Nile to the South. Only the two of them. Quite daring, one might think.
He understood that it was probably tempting to challenge him to such a trip. Given how he presented himself it would surely be either a laughing matter or a reason for him to quickly look for an excuse to not join.
To the surprise of many Horatio agreed to join Vidar on his trip to Egypt. Little did he know that the endurance-bug bit him quite hard some time ago and this was just perfectly playing into his hands. His newfound knowledge of possible relations might have been an additional motivator to join but he swore to himself to not let this topic come up. At least not now. Everything had its time.

A little while latter plans were made, things prepared, and sure enough they met again at their starting point. To get used to heat and their surrounding they decided to stay at the local national park for a bit. Just enough to determine if they and their equine partners would be able to deal with the heat and the upcoming challenges.

It seems the local residents didn't take long to get acquainted to their visitors.
