I just kinda imagine, they're in different Zones, so they probably use whatever available around there. The friends I have in my KJ group all use the same ones, so its got that whole 'history' feel.

Cool!! YEah, my friend made her raygun out of cardboard and painted it. She stacked like 6 pieces of cardboard together to make it thick enough.

Ugh, I couldn't find a usable holster anywhere. I used a colorful scarf, and decided it was part of the character xD A good way to go, is the cheap tool belt add-ons that are just the one little pocket.
