Description My idea of what the Great War looked like

the result of listening to a shit ton of Sabaton while waiting for RWBY Vol 4 and the new Sabaton album

We dont really have much on what the Great War looked like so I had to design the outfits for the most part myself, aside from the Mantle outfits.

Mantle- made it look like an older version of the current soldiers uniform for Atlas
Vale- gave them a look similar to the US Army, using aspects from 1910's to the 1980's, based on what we know know of Vale geography
Vacuo- based on what we know of the region, I based their looks on the uniforms of the Australian Army during World War 2 and the Vietnam War
Mistral- I based the outfit of the school uniforms of the Mistral students and gave them a tactical upgrade

the song is A Lifetime of War by Sabaton

from what we know of the Great War, I felt it was fitting

have nice day

The Story of the Great War.

The Great War of Remnant. A terrible name for such a horrible time in Remnant's history. While the war itself lasted for about a decade (10 years), the preceding century (100 years) leading up to the event was filled with so much tension that is just waiting to explode, one might consider to just lump them together.

Most of that tension originated from the kingdom of Mistral. Territories that are rich with resources as well as being safe from the Creatures of Grimm have always been in high demand but the ruling emperor of Mistral had managed to conquer nearly all that Anima had to offer.

This was thanks to the help provided by an unlikely friend. The Kingdom of Mantle.

The two kingdoms had formed an alliance. Mistral provided Mantle with all kinds of valuable goods that cannot be obtained in the kingdom's frozen tundra while in return, Mantle introduced technological innovation as well as guidance to Mistral's residents who lived in Anima's cold northern territories.

It was all good until one day, it wasn't. An incident with the Grimm at Mantle had led to a strange and unexpected law. That law is the abolishment of the arts as well as the repression of self expression. The people of Mantle believed that they would be much safer from the Grimm if they could suppress the emotions of the kingdom's masses.

Given Mistral's strong artistic culture, many assumed that this law would be the end of the two kingdoms' alliance. But, they were wrong. Mistral complied with Mantle's law albeit selectively. Enforcing Mantle's law only in the kingdom's outer territories while allowing the central powers of the kingdom itself to live as they pleased.

If you haven't caught on yet, Mistral's leadership is full of jerks.

The people of the kingdom of Vale had a problem with this. Actually, they had a problem with a lot of things that both Mistral and Mantle had been up to. Mistreatment of the kingdoms' citizens, use of slave labor and the kingdoms' leaders' constant insistence that their way of life was best for ALL of Remnant.

Eventually, Mistral made the jump across the sea to the eastern coast of the continent, Sanus. The small islands and peninsulas in the area where a perfect place to establish a establishment. They were so perfect, in fact, that Vale had just began settling into the area themselves.

The king of Vale did everything he could to avoid armed conflict between the settlers from both Mistral against those of Vale. Despite cries from his people, he insisted on sharing the land with the settlers from Mistral.

But, to this day, nobody knows who shot first but what began as a mere riot between two bands of settlers would suddenly became the VERY FIRST battle of the Great War.

Mantle quickly came to Mistral's side to help them fight against Vale. Battles were fought on both Sanus and Anima soil. Villages were lost to both combat and Grimm.

It wasn't long before the kingdom of Vacuo decided to join the party. Up to this point, Vacuo had done its best to stay out of the fight. The kingdoms of both Mantle and Mistral had both already established a small presence in Vacuo's territory years before. They promised the kingdom of Vacuo to leave them alone on the condition that Vacuo didn't interfere.

Soon, those talks evolved. They went from "Don't side with the enemy" to "Side with us and you'll be safe". Vacuo didn't really much care for that. In time, they came to the conclusion that if Vale were to fall, then there would be no one left to stop Mantle and Mistral from conquering them next.

So, they did what they considered to be the most logical action. The kingdom of Vacuo kicked both Mistral and Mantle out of their territories along with telling the kingdom of Vale that they got their backs in this war.

And so, the Great War raged on. Grimm attacks increased worldwide. On the battlefield, the presence of attacking Grimm signaled a temporary ceasefire to deal with the monsters before returning to the fight at hand. Those left miserable back home were often helpless due to their best warriors being away fighting the "good" fight. A lot of settlements were lost during those 10 years and most were never reclaimed. Rations on food and Dust were put into effect. Development of technology accelerated. Humans and Faunus who fought alongside each other become closer and every day, mankind grew more and more efficient in destroying itself.

But it all ended in the Vacuo Campaign. Both Mistral and Mantle knew that if they could take the Dust mines of Vacuo, they would effectively cut off the supply of Dust to the enemy. It was meant to be a final devastating blow that would take out both Vale and Vacuo for good.

Sadly, they were only half right. At that time, the king of Vale himself personally led his entire army alongside the supporting soldiers of Vacuo and decimated all of the enemy soldiers. Crown on top of his head as well as armed with only a sword and his ornate royal scepter, he laid waste to countless men.

As the sand was soaked red in spilled blood, the Creatures of Grimm came in groups. It was the deadliest battle of the Great War and legends of the greatness and terror of the Warrior King of Vale were born. Historians will say that those stories are mere grandiose hyperbole. More logical reasons for such a high death count could be unusually violent weather conditions as well as Mantle's unfamiliarity with desert combat.

But whatever the reason, everyone who had survived the fight that day bowed to the king of Vale once the Great War was over. The entire world of Remnant was ready to live under the rule of the kingdom of Vale. However, the king refused this opportunity that laid before him.

After that, the leaders of the four kingdoms met on the island of Vytal and it was on that island where they would form a treaty and establish Remnant's future. Territories were redistributed, slavery was abolished, governments were restructured and the Warrior King himself, the kingdom of Vale's FINAL king, founded the Huntsman Academies (Beacon Academy for Vale, Haven Academy for Mistral, Atlas Academy for Mantle and Shade Academy for Vacuo) as well as placing his most trusted and loyal followers as the very FIRST leaders of each school.

The schools would teach the world's people how to fight as long as the people promised to fight for themselves and never against themselves.
