Description Sorry I've been away, and I had to shelve the Diver for awhile.  Just finished a 6 month internship (10/16-03/17) for a mocap company, but sadly, they couldn't offer me a job.  I'm a bit rusty drawing her, so this is my 1st attempt to draw her again.

So, here's another rough draft of a comic strip for the Pearl Diver.  I applied a few tricks to make it look more "polished".  First, I used a color map so I could easily select areas to apply the gradient for the sky or background.  Second, I cleaned the frames by adding thicker rectangular borders.  Third, I sharpened the edges to make the image more crisp.  Fourth, I added a red filter to unify the color for the whole image.  Fifth, I added an extra shadow on the breast area to make it look more defined.  In the final stage, I added an antagonist, (i.e. the Loch Ness monster) in the lake which added a short linear story for the strip.

The 4 images are as follows: final image, color map, black & white version, pencil.

steps added:
    color map (used for gradients)
    clean rectangle borders
    sharpen edges
    red filter
    added shadow to breast area
    Loch Ness monster antagonist
    short story

Welcome back!  I'm sorry about the job but hopefully the experience you gained will help you land another.  Your pearl diver art looks good.  I don't think you work is "rusty"  It looks pretty polished.  How many hours do you think you spent to go from the pencil sketch to the final color image?  It looks good although I have to say the Loch Ness monster was an interesting choice for her enemy

Thanx Nemo.  The whole process took me 2 days, so it took approximately 16 hours.  Inking & coloring was quicker to do than the actual sketch.  I have a habit of writing down the steps I have in the pipeline, so the succeeding ones will go even quicker.

The creature is NOT necessarily "Nessie", the Loch Ness monster from Scotland.  I just chose the name for the serpentine creature because it look like a plesiosaurus.  In fact it even has legs like a brontosaurus.

The point is the world of the Diver is prehistoric.  She's a cave girl who mysteriously is given intellect.  Am scrapping her trident weapon & giving her a whale bone dagger to keep her ultra primitive much like the lost worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs.
